360/12V64

Post by bowser2533 »

Just recently purchased a 360/12 V 64. It was made in May of 98. Why did this guitar come with the hot toasters in it? The person I bought it from never changed them. He said it came from Rickenbacker stock like that, 11ks. I thot they were suppost to be around 6 or 7.4k. The guitar sounds a little muddy compared to my other 360/12 with the 7.4 scatterwounds. I thot all the vintage 12s made in the 60s had the lower output pick ups in them? Any thoughts on this. Maybe its just to sell P/Us ? Love the Guitar tho!!!!

That sounds correct for that year; my old 4001V63 from April '98 had a hot toaster in it, as did the '98 360V64 I had (two of them in that case). I think it was around 2000 or so when the 7.4K scatterwound was introduced.

Im going to install the 7.4 scatterwounds in it this week. Do you think it will brighten it up at all? Just sounds muddy to me as compared to my other 360/12 with the 7.4s in it. Gary

The general consensus around here is that the hot toaster are better suited to 6 stringers, with the scatterwounds great for 12 string.

It WILL brighten up A LOT.

I did the unwinding procedure on mine, it's a totally different beast.

The link was intended to chronicle the rebirth of the scatterwound toasters... introduced with the '99 special edition models 425, 450 and 325/12.

Just replaced the pickups in my 360/12 V/64 with the 7.4 scatterwounds and installed a .0047 cap and push pull pot. The difference is like nite and day. The shimmer or the (jangle) is back. The guitar had the hot toasters in it, around 11.5ks. It always sounded a bit muddy to me. This is the best money Ive spent in awhile. Buy the way, I did record the guitar before and after, and WOW there is a big difference. Gary

Y'all got me thinkin'. I've got a 96 V64 12 & a 09 381 V69 6. Would I benefit from swaping the toasters from these guitars? I share the opinions from what I read here. The only thing I'm leary of is losing the great clean tones I'm getting from my 381 & I'm battling feedback when I boost (with a eq pedal) for leads. My band plays 2/3 material that I play clean. Maybe my best option is to get a new set of "scatter wounds" for my V64 12.

Thanks for any knowledgable thoughts!

I'd suggest that you swap them.

I think you'll prefer the scatterwounds in the v64. There are exceptions, but that's the standard reaction. If you don't end up liking the "hot" ones in the v69, you can get another set of scatterwounds. If the $300 for another set is a concern, you can sell the "hot" ones on here for that or maybe a little more, depending upon condition.

I swapped pickups between my 360/12v64 and my 660 and it improved both of them, as far as I concerned. I've since put "hot" toasters in several other 6-strings. The swap will be much more noticeable on the 12-string. The 381 won't be quite as bright when clean, but its really minor, and you'll get a 'fuller' overdrive/crunch tone.

All I will say is that when some of us unwound either hot toasters or really hot high-gains years ago, the scatterwound 7.4 kohm toasters were not available back then. There is demand for the overwound toasters, as stated above, especially for those wanting more drive out of a 6-string Rick. So please don't unwind these, and don't short yourself if you decide you want to purchase scatterwounds and sell the overwounds.
