I was with him until he installed the frets and dot inlays on the face. For me, those signaled the end of a perfectly good opportunity.

I don't like binding on my bass for two reasons, first is I like the "s" look, second and most important reason is, because it's harder and more expensive to refret. My very first Rickenbacker was a 1976 4001 FG (refin to maple) and it had real bad fretwear after almost 20 years of heavy playing (I was its 2nd owner) and played the hell out of that bass. The wear was so bad I ended up (doing a Jaco) and ripping the frets out with a knife and pliars and coating it with epoxy. Anyway, the bass was pretty beat up at that point, so I saved up some $$ and ended up selling it to get a newer Rickenbacker bass.

And TBH,i love the way they looked pre-'73,and really like the way the new FWI's look now. But for decades,i thought the material used,and the smaller size just didn't get it. Dots for me are preferred on Jazz bass necks,too. (Again,mostly because of the lack of accompanying neck binding...

I agree, I love the return of the FWIs, and really liked the crushed pearl, but if I were doing this, I'd take the binding off the body as well, because that's where I notice it most when playing.

See the black binding? It's still there. He just planed the fretboard to get rid of the triangles and was very careful to keep the binding intact.
