Ted......the s8 gave me the blisters on my Saturday gig. I played it for about 2/3rds of the set (probably about an hour) and I must say that I was thrilled with it. I didn't have much of a problem actually playing it but it was hard on my fingers. I, wisely but unfortunately, did not play it at the House of Blues because I knew I was going to have problems with the blisters tearing anyway and the s8 is like a cheese grater on healthy fingers so I figured I'd use it another day.
I started bleeding half way through the 2nd song (75 minute set) and it just got worse and worse. It was probably the best gig of my "career" so I wasn't going to let a little blood/pain dampen the evening. I can't stress enough how happy I was to see the stage manager signal us that we only had time for two more songs
It took me almost an hour to clean it up today....back to lookin' like new again (except for the Barts, of course)

Ric purity police are after me for drilling holes in Rics, for removing bass cut capaciters, for removing ric-o-sound, for removing mutes, for adding a low B to a 4 string bass, for adding a pickup in the mute cavity, for prefering modern rics to vintage rics, ...
so it is your ric ... do what you want with it ... and if they or I kid you don't worry about it ...

I owned a 4003s5 and found it too cumbersome due to the string spacing....I have since opted to string one of my 4003's BEAD. Problem solved
. The s8 plays almost the same as the 4 stringers so no major problem there either (except for the bloodbath of course).
You seem to find it hard to accept that not everyone wants/needs a 5 string

I found the same solution as David Mitchell (see above--no relation) I decided to put the original rear pickup cover back on, sans horseshoe. When I took off the horseshoe the chrome pickup cover had sharp edges around the hole so I took a file and dulled the edges. It didn't take much to take the edge off and you can't tell anything was done to it visually.
I'd rather die while I'm livin' that live while I'm dead!
