4003 truss rod steel.

Post by 59jazz »

I pulled the rods from my '88 4003 and they are really curved. Somewhat difficult to bend them back into a slight curve, so I'd like to make a new set. What type or grade of cold rolled steel are these rods? A2, W1? Would I be okay with A2 drill stock?

If you're not going to straighten them, just buy new ones. They're not that expensive, and they're already wrapped with heat shrink.

Yes Dane, I'm being cheap......$40.00 + $23.00 in shipping vs. $13.00. Need to get my $'s worth out of my tap & dye set.

Maybe he wants to color the rods?

Can't believe I said DYE.....I guess it's time to let this thread "die".....I'll go forward with the new rods from RIC Boutique; at least I get new hardware with them. JPS I had purchased some green heat shrink for the rods......guess I'll have to settle for white.

I'm interested in tie dyeing my trussrods, can I just use that tie dye from the grocery store, or do I need something stronger?

I'm sorry, but I'm just not feeling a '60s vibe from cold rolled steel truss rods that are grey-ish.... man....

Found me some polished A2 drill stock rod and tapped the ends at 8/32. The heat shrink didn't do so well, so I used 3M painters tape and wrapped it tighter than a recreational cigarette. They slid right into the channels with ease.
