Cool to hear an accounting of the EA,and congrats on your purchase. I was interested at one time in checking out an Acoustic Image amp,as they were among the early lightweight D class amps, but overall i got the impression they would be too clean, possibly sterile sounding.

I've been able to play through one of the earlier Acoustic Image combos quite a bit. It's a well made amp that is excellent for amped string bass, but not so much for the old slab. I haven't tried newer ones. I've also been able to play through the 1x12 and 2x10 GK class D combos. They're pretty good for upright and really good for electric bass. A little hollow sounding - maybe that's the neo speakers, I don't know. I have a friend who plays through a Mark combo. Louder than all get out! He puts it on some sort of pallet.

The EA through the Bag End doesn't sound plastic-icky, unless you mean easily shaped...the eq is subtle but very effective. My only concern right now is that there is a bit of that buzz you get when you don't have your hand on the strings. That is something I haven't dealt with in, well, twenty years. But I'm going to continue working with it. I'm setting up my GK MB150s next to it and see how they compare. I just remembered that I have an ab switcher, I'll stick that in between and drive my neighbors nuts for a while. FUN!

I think a clean sound is all right, I really believe that the sound we have in our noggins is what ultimately comes out of whatever rig we play through. Especially when you reach a certain price point!

Turns out that buzz has also been happening with the GK. It's just a different timbre with the new amp. Funny how we become habituated to things like that. Thats why I'm trying not to rush to judgements with this new thing. On the other hand, that GK is truly a little beast. Thank God they didn't put vents in the top of that.

I have an Markbass LMII through GK NEO cabs. I love it but I still wonder if there is any reward in chasing after big tube power aside from the portability issues? SVT, Mesa 400, Bassman 300, Sunn, will I hear THAT tone or is it just testosterone fueled nostagia? I have Audio Research tube stereo gear at home and I'll tell you there is NO comparison in tone once you hear it against solidstate for HIFI.

When I was young ( in the 70's) I thought a full SVT was the ultimate amp. For the last 30 years I've been playing through transistors as I'm too lazy to move tube amps. A few weeks ago I did a gig with a full SVT as backline. I was really looking forward to it. I missed my Markbass. I'm hoping the SVT was in need of new tubes & that the dream hasn't died!

The portability factor is huge. I'll bet if Paulie had to move his stuff around, right?, he'd be carrying his Hofner in a back pack gig bag and pipe it through a little neo-cabbed Ashdown class d combo bungee corded to a collapsible luggage cart.

I use a Behringer 300W amp in a Vox cabinet I built to fit it powering a NCM T-60 cabinet. Heavy, but reliable.

woodyng wrote: I just bought a Markbass 800 tube amp to replace the LM amp section of my CMD121p combo, looking forward to hearing what that does for the sound.from what i've read, the tube channel does not really do much, but the extra power and headroom will be appreciated I'm sure.
Got the head units swapped out without too much hoopla. The new head has a lot more oomph, and the blend channel actually gives some very noticeable variations in grind/clarity with the tube/SS channels. It sounded like a very low setting on my VT,which i left off to familiarize myself with the amp.

With my hofner i've always used my 1964 Vox T-60 & 1x12/1x15 cab.
But my 4003s arrives today so i'll be able to try that through it!
