The neck volume pot has been replaced. There is a non original white jumper wire bypassing the bass cut cap. The tone caps were usually orange Spragues with different insulation on the leads. Ya, someone's been in there all right.

I figured that, it dosen't look like factory quality work, and I've also had that confirmed by a factory source.

I'm think that maybe I should replace the whole harness with a new factory one which includes the "push-pull" pot

Jim, get Dane to make you a period correct harness. Way better than a stock modern one. He can even add the push/pull. That's what's going in my '68.

Good idea, thanks for the suggestion, what would say are the differences in the two, Pot values, tolerances ? Cap values and tolerances ??

Although pot and cap values are the same in my harnesses for vintage Ricks, tolerances are much closer.

Would you happen to have a picture of your wiring harness. Looking at mine I'm surprised at the "mess" the soldering looks like it was done by a blind man, and I have to think the quality of work leaving the factory was a lot better than what I see on mine.

Looks like Dane, and others, got you squared away on this but for what it's worth, here is a photo of a July '73 4001 (I don't have a photo of the harness on the March '73 but they are the same, anyway). I added the red wire that bypasses the .0047µF cap for the bridge pickup. I no longer have this particular 4001 (in your favorite color), a friend of mine near Philly is its current caretaker.

I've actually got those caps in stock too, but we're gonna go with Sprague Orange drops and an aqua cap with push-pull bypass for the cap since that was what was commonly used from '71-'73. I've never seen an aqua .0047 bass cut cap in a '73, but I'm pretty sure no one would have found one to replace an original Sprague if they were bypassing it.

Thanks everyone for all the help with this, I installed the new harness last night, not without issues (non of those tribute to Dane's new harness)

Here's the old harness ready to be removed, as you can see it looks like it was Soldered by someone with their eyes closed

Here's the old and new harnesses side by side:

Old harness de-soldered from pickups and earth wire, I've a "Bobby"

New Harness attached to the Pick Guard and Bridge pickup reattached

Everything reattached and all's well

Has anyone any ideas about this, I've not come across this on any other Ric I've ever owned, the number "944" punched into the body under the Pick Guard

Nice bass! Good call on putting Sprague caps in her! While I do like the tone vintage Ajax give you, the orange goodness that comes from those Spragues is awesome!!

73 was a transitional year in every way! My May 73 had a pair of ******* brown caps in her, different than what was in yours and Jeff's. She still sounded great! My late 72 has Spragues.
