Just have a few in my collection. Here's part of my Richard Petty/Petty Motorsports collection.

I've got 2 1984 McLaren F1 cars and a 1966 Ford GT40 LeMans car on my workbench at the moment.

Either I love building models, or I like huffing paint and glue.

I once had and built a Richard Petty NASCAR model. It was his Blue Roadrunner. I forget which year the car was though.
I DON'T miss the glue---it smelled nasty

Aah, a modeler! A few of us here, too!

Those are quite professional, Paul. Really fine work, and a nice series there.

Just three of two hundred + in the collection. Starting this fall sometime, the entire collection will be moving to the EAA AirVenture Museum for permanent display. I will continue to donate to the collection, so this is not the end!

An update on the McCartneyization of my 4003S! Larry has been busy. The bass has been stripped to the bare wood. Luckily, the wood under the black finish was fairly plain, nothing ugly, and a good candidate for a vintage firego.

Now for the fun part: reversing the headstock! First, trimming the sides for replacement with the padauk.

And Larry's template for a 1964 headstock compared to what's left of mine:

And a little idea of the headstock shaped "properly"

Is the luthier going to apply veneers to front and back to cover old headstock and tuner hole outlines? Not sure how this is accomplished otherwise, fascinating to watch!

Veneers are definitely an option, but I'm not 100% sure what Larry has in mind. I'm sure he has a plan! :D

Larry will have to use a veneer over the front and back of the center section. The new tuner post holes will be in completely different places, so the old hole locations would show, which I would have dowelled before I cut the headstock wings off.

Let us pause for a moment to consider the phrase "before I cut the headstock wings off" in the context of a brand new instrument. This does qualify as "extreme makeover", but from what I've seen of Larry's work here, it will be a knockout in the end. Not for the Faint of Heart, however.

Edit:
Mis-read that as a new lefty 4001s, not a 93', dang that was in good shape!

Yep, it was in SPECTACULAR shape when I received it from John. Larry even said he looked up the serial number to see that it was a 1993 model because he was surprised at the condition for a 22 year old bass. :D

Here are the newest photos from Larry!

First, preparing the headstock extension. Cutting the old wood and the new so they interlock:

Gluing the extension and then filling the old tuner holes with dowels:

Routing the edges smooth and then skimming the surface:

Prepared new lengthened headstock:

Front and rear veneers glued and clamped in place!

Now were getting somewhere! Padauk headstock wings clamped and glued:

And now what the template looks like against the corrected headstock:
