Schaller Tuners
When did Rickenbacker fit Schaller tuners to 4001's in the '70s? Did they ever fit them in '74 alongside the Grovers?

The only bass RIC ever put Schaller tuners on in the 70's was the 4002 (Schaller M4's). Perhaps you're thinking of the old Klusons that resemble the Schallers that RIC puts on current 4003's? The Klusons were used throught the 70's, and perhaps into the early 80's.
Re: Schaller Tuners
The one I've seen, a Feb '74, has the back of the tuners actually stamped Schaller, just like the current 4003 ones are branded Ric!
They also have been on the bass for many years.

I should add that they actually resemble the standard Ric stamped tuners as well.

Those would have been replacement tuners someone added. I'll bet they were the big 1/2" posts too, which meant the original holes were enlarged.
Re: Schaller Tuners
Looks that way to me. Guess this was a regular mod in the 70's as a Grover replacement? They certainly look like they've been on there since the mid-70's!

But with M4S tuning keys, sometime in the early '80s, and then those were replaced with Hipshot Ultralite tuning keys in 2004.
Re: Schaller Tuners
I still can't believe you had Hipshot Ultralights with 1/2" posts on that bass Jeff. It hurts my eyes to even look at that....

Re: Schaller Tuners
They helped very significantly with reducing neck dive as the Schallers were fairly heavy, and they required nothing more than one small screw hole in the back of the headstock for each one (the post holes were already enlarged); that hole was within the perimeter of the original Klusons so, to me, no big deal. Remember, that bass was a working tool for me.aceonbass wrote:I still can't believe you had Hipshot Ultralights with 1/2" posts on that bass Jeff. It hurts my eyes to even look at that....

These 2 examples look really extreme, but the larger post chrome Gotohs you used when you made the 4002v57 looked perfect on that bass. Are they different post sizes from the ones pictured? (They're certainly larger than the Mini Schaller posts).
I actually replaced them with gold versions of the same thing, when i swapped the hardware on my Cii and Laredo. (And they were not easy to find!)
