I seem to have more of that issue with the higher notes on the G string than anywhere else.

That upper register G string does take a little more practice, especially to be good enough to improvise up there and get the intonation right on a tricky solo. Be sure your strings are intonated like you expect them to be. Also, there's nothing wrong with intonating the G string a bit "offset" if that's how you like to play it.

Now,that's interesting,and something i would never have thought to do! I will experiment with that.
I'm really not a soloist per se,especially in the jazz idiom,but i do like to try to inject interesting snippets under whatever else is going on in a song.

The Pre EB '80 Stingray I used to own with factory ebony board was a tone monster. One of the very few I regret letting go. Hey, Stevie's in the UK, so it actually pretty easy.

I'm actually lucky enough to have a Wal Mk1, it's fretted though, its a monster bass. I've got a 77 Stingray as well which is fretted. I must have had too much cash at some point. I keep thinking I should sell them but just can't let them go!

Stephen, funnily enough, I have a Mk1 and a '77 Stingray too! They are both incredible sounding, and in some ways represent the best of that particular model. I wouldn't let either go! What year is your Wal?

Hey Andrew what a coincidence! My Wal is an 83 Wenge facings and a mahogany core. I've contemplated selling but it never happens!

I've had several, currently have an 85 4003fl. they used to have side markers where every fret would be but sometime in the early 2000's they just used side markers from a fretted 4003 which to me doesn't make sense as the markers are not usable at least for me, they are in the middle of the 3rd 5th like to markers on their fretted basses, so if you use them as guides you'll be seriously flat. My first was a fretless P bass which had markers at 3rd 5th also but they were right on the note which I still like the best. The older Ricks have them as I said on every note but that can get confusing as you go up past the 7th position, not good for a slide, you can easily land on the wrong note, but I consider the older ones to have the superior system.

. I have an '82 with Imbuya facings, it's the only one with that wood I've ever seen. Both basses are very hard to replace, and I can't imagine selling either, either!
