I am not a fan of the .0047 bass cut capacitor ... because it does not add treble ... it cuts bass and low mid response from the treble pickup ... the .0047 cap worked on 60's basses with 60's pickups and 60's amps ... but with modern 4003 basses and modern amps you can get all the treble you want without a capacitor ... but if you want to get that vintage sound it is an inexpensive mod that is reversible ...
the .047 capacitor is the treble cut capacitor or what we all know as the tone control ... it bleeds high frequency off to ground ...

Make sure it's 0.047 uf (microfarad). My wiring change wasn't so ingenious, it bleeds treble to ground when one of the volume controls is cut and is noticable when it is cut more than 75%. I wonder if 1 meg volume pots would help? It is nice though because it balances the pickups when you cut the neck pickup, takes out some of the mid. and you can go all the way from modern 4003 sound to a 70's 4001 sound on the same bass and anywhere between with just a twist of a knob and is totally reversable. I haven't tried it on a newer 4003 though.
Hey Paul!!!! You Rock and Roll Thug...Where you been? I haven't seen you posting here in quite awhile...I thought that maybe you got locked in a storeroom at the studio or married!! Oh, I know, you became like Gollum and sat in your room coveting your "Precious" 73mgfl...anyway, welcome back and a Happy belated western New Years and a pre-mature Chinese New Year!! dm
Yo David!!!
Just finished tracking and mixing, besides other projects, the new album by a singer who's like our Sinatra/Bennet...absolutely one of the least rock and roll project in my career, but it was a lot of fun. Tracking that man's vocal and the string section was very enjoyable! Now I'm taking a little break and...you're right, I'm back to being Gollum having fun with my "Preciouses" for a few days! Happy New Year, both Chinese and Western!

Hi, back on the .0047 capacitor mod question again. They seem to be like hens teeth in the UK. I have tried 6 different electronics places now and the closest I can get is .005 ! Is this close enough? Would someone be kind enough to inform me?
I am getting close to abandoning this idea. We could do with Radio Shack here. We have Maplins, but never once have they had what I wanted!
