'Til I Met You

I am wondering, seeing as John McNally wrote this number, whether any thought at the time was given to having him record it instead of Mike Pender? Did John play the classical guitar on the recording. It is a beautiful ballad that certainly was deserving of a place in the charts.

I always wondered why KAPP (the Searchers' US label) didn't do a "Love Potion No.9" and release "'Til I Met You" as a single over here. I've always thought it was one of the most melodic, and beautiful songs they ever did, and I agree that it would have been a very strong single. What I'm curious about is who made, and why the decision was made at PYE not to release it as a single in the UK.Did the band have any input in the decision?

Personally i don't think it'd be a hit single. It's a bit overlong and repetitive, imho (two verses repeated twice, now!). Plus, the tune (being kinda interesting, anyway) seems to be a bit too sophisticated for a 'hit song'. Why it wasn't released as a single, is another question.
According to McNally himself, the company, and the band itself, didn't have faith in him as a songwriter (if, of course, i got his words right). Maybe if it was written by Curtis...
Peter: wonder how it would sound, with McNally's voice... maybe a kind of Leonard Cohen or Nick Cave doing "Cry baby cry"... that'd be interesting, anyway.

...(suite) oh yes it does. I mean, this is not a "tragic" case when you say "oh no, no, he should never try it again cause it awful". But it HAS changed, that's for sure, and i wouldn't make a bet it was for worse or for better: it kinda got higher (which isn't good imho) but it also kinda got deeper (which isn't at all bad, vice versa, exactly). I think it would have sounded alot different in 60s with the same vocalist, maybe a lot more funny.
