Correct .0047 cap for a 1968 4001

Post by brycycle »

Hi all -

Expertise/opinions needed:

I'm working on fixing-up a '68 4001 with Larry Davis. The harness is missing the .0047 cap (the .047s being the stock navy blue). Would a navy blue .0047 be period-correct, or the smaller turquoise variety?

Thank you -

Hey Bryce, long time no see. Welcome back!

The one you want for a '68 (.0047 cap) is the little turquoise one. Not sure about basses, but I remove that cap on all the guitars, it improves the sound 100%

Hi Colin -

Thanks, it's been quite a while.

That was much hunch as well, referring to a '68 harness on my old 4005.

The lead wire to the horseshoe has also been replaced - assuming that's the thicker gauge (than neck pup) grey wire? If anyone has leads (ha) on sourcing such are appreciated - I'll post-up in the wanted section as well. I've got a pretty good parts box to trade from if that's more enticing.

Bryce.......I recently found a supplier that sells the original slightly smaller gauge pickup lead wire with the white core wire and grey insulation. PM me your address and lemmy know how much you need.

Is there a source for new molded caps? I'm also working on a 1968 restoration and wanted to hand build the harness and have it look somewhat period correct. Thanks! Tim

I've searched online for hours, and have not been able to find an exact duplicate visually for the .0047 "turquois cap". I've found some really cool looking mini versions of the cap though.
