Yes, it was unfinished when he received... but NOT when the Beatlemania was at its peak.
As Larry Wassgren wrote:

"Manabu and I looked over V81 very closely in Japan for about two hours. I checked my notes we took that day and it does have a very thin lacquer coat on the fretboard which was half worn off. It would be hard to see from any distance. Because it was worn I wouldn't think Ron DeMarino would have sprayed the fretboard as John didn't play it enough in the late 70's to wear the lacquer off the fretboard. I also think that the coach painter only sprayed the guitar black. I believe the fretboard had the thin lacquer applied by Burns Of London when they did the refret on John's '58 in 1963. At this time the fretboard also becomes much lighter again as they must have cleaned it up real good before refretting."

So it is...
By the way Joe, excellent your Bow-tie bridge and Burns knobs.
So long, Marcelo.Image

I got this CD last week - I love it - I always liked this album. I always felt it was John getting grounded after all the wierdness of the preceding 12 years. I put "Rock and Roll" on, followed by "Run Devil Run" and drive around town really fast...

"Rock 'n' Roll" was a great CD. Especailly coming after albums like "Imagine" and "Walls and Bridges", both great albums, but you can feel the excitement and enthusiasm for this album. Very fresh, but raw. He definitely sounded as if some of the load had lifted, at least for this album. I heard Lennon was always worried about how his vocals sounded, but that album he is truly at his best. You can really feel his love for good old rock and roll on that album! This is the album that I sometimes get emotional on because the kid in Lennon comes out. How we all were screwed out of so much more.

Speaking of "some of the load had lifted", I thought I had heard that John and Yoko had split up during the time this album was recorded. He was probably allowed to have fun.
It's my favorite, post Beatle, Lennon album.

I'd never heard this record till now....got the cd for Christmas and just listened to it yesterday to and from work.....I'm surprised at his voice, not what I was expecting....very raw but fresh...he sounds kind of "frail" ? If that's the correct term....

I really liked "You Can't Catch Me"...

Kevin, I think this was recorded during Lennon's "Lost Weekend" time frame. I think he was living in LA at this time. I think the split lasted 18 months. Good call Kevin!

Have you ever noticed that MPL owns the publishing rights to a couple of songs? I find that a bit ironic.
