I like the 2000 series basses ... the 4000 series ugly cousin ... but the slimmer neck and better bridge and hot pickups make for a cool bass ... these baby's rock ... if you want to play heavy music or punk music .. then you will like this bass ...
come on guys ... look at it from my point of view ... it has no ric-o-sound, no mute, no pickup cover, no bass cut capaciter, it has hot pickups, it can easily be palm muted, it is easy to convert to a 5 or 8 string bass ... what's not to like!!!!

Put me down as (the only one?) preferring the 3001 & 2000-series basses. I think they're beautiful. (As is the 200 series of guitars. Mine is a 1991 230 MG.)
Every 4001 I ever played (before and after getting my 3001 waaaay back in 1976) seemed head-heavy; I'd have to hold the neck up as I played while standing. (Did I hold them wrong?) My 3001 (which has a body that is as heavy as a mofo) has never had that problem. In fact, I was in the process or ordering a 4001 in 1976 when I saw the 3001 on the wall of the store, and I've never looked back.
Plus, with my little girly hands and short fingers, having the thinner fretboard (side to side) is ideal. (Can't stand playing a Farder P-bass--too much fretboard to reach across!) I don't care how much neck is in my palm, but gotta have the skinny width for my short fingers.
Sure, I probably still want a 4001/3S or a 4004C or a c64 or a v63 (gimme dots and no binding any day), but mostly because I was raised on Geddy, Rutherford, McCartney, Squire, and Foxton, and the shape still beckons to my 16-year-old heart (in the 44-year-old body) like a Siren. A head-heavy Siren.
No sacrilege intended, dudes. I just love my 3001.

Right on Chris! I've got a '78 3001 that I simply love. With the exception of the permanent dent it has put in my shoulder it's been a great bass. (My band refers to it simply as "The Coffee Table Bass").
I love the single p/u design & the general feel of it. It has it's own unique tones that my other basses can't reproduce.
Plus it looks really cool sitting between my 4001 & 4003!
