Still Waiting....

Post by nobody_blues »

Hi Guys I'm New To The Forums. I Recently Ordered A Midnight Blue 4003 From MF And When it Got Here I Found That Two Of The Feet On The Case Had Been Smashed In Which Inturn Jammed The Plush Lining Into The Headstock And Took Off Some Of The Finish. So I Had To Send It Back Image. I've Been Reading These Forums For Some Time Now So I Finally Decided To Sign Up For The Forums And To Say Hello While Wait For My Bass.

From one "newbie" to another, WELCOME! I, too, have a Midnight Blue Ric and love it to death. How long do they say the wait will be?

You know...I live in Kansas City. MF has a "Clearance Center" here in town, so, theoretically I could go down to the store in a couple of weeks and buy your returned bass! Naw...My Wife would literally KILL me!!

Welcome Jon. Always sad to hear about a Rick damaged by the shipping gorillas. Did this happen in one of the plastic RIC cases or in the silver vintage tolex case? I happen to have a preference for the vintage case.

If it happened in the plastic one, you might want to upgrade to the silver next time around.

Jeff, do you really think the silver case is sturdier? I happen to think that the SKB case is much more roadworthy the the vintage case. I was somewhat disappointed in the quality of the silver case when I got my c64. It's a lot prettier than the SKB, but not as tough IMHO.
Buy it before someone else does.

I had a brand new 4003MG delivered last year. It came with the vintage silver tolex case. It arrived with pickguard crushed, the switch broken and the pickup cover lugs bust. I didnt investigate but the cover just moved freely up and down so I assume there was damage. I didnt rate the vintage case I thought it was very flimsy and unsubstatial. My replacement came with the standard polypropylens case...no problems.

Bob-
I guess I don't have a lot of experience pounding the garbage out of either case. I'm pretty gentle on my stuff so maybe I'm wrong. But I saw the thread here regarding the plastic cases and damage to more than one Rick in shipping because of the location of the hinge bolt. The apparent conclusion that came from the discussion was that the bolt is very close to the guitar's side near the jack and is seperated by not a lot of padding. I've also seen a few examples of the plastic feet crushing/cracking. I haven't heard any complaints about the silver RI cases.

I prefer the look, the padding(my plastic cases shed more "blue fuzzies"), and the larger and enclosed compartment on the silver cases. The plastic cases are a little lighter and the handle is more comfortable, but thats how I see it.

I think my favorite RIC cases were the late 70's/early 80's cases that had the form-fitting foam.

Hey Guys My Rick Has The Black Plastic Not The Vintage. Also I Think Mf Is As Much To Blame As The Shipping Company Because One The Box Was Barely Big Enough To Fit The Case And Two There Was Very Little Cushioning In The Box. And To Chris Sorry Ya Got The Wrong Guy I Wasn't Alive In 1979 :D.

The SKB type case is decidely more sturdy than the vintage type but UPS is more than capable of breaking either type. Fed Ex's system is more gentle on guitars and now that their claims service has been modernized, it's a better way to go.
