EB should use a scientist to edit their promo blurbs Cobalt itself is not an alloy (it's an element), so the use of "other alloy" is a non sequitur. A more accurate wording would probably be, "Our proprietary cobalt-containing alloy provides a stronger magnetic relationship between pickups and strings than that with any other alloy previously available." (with the "than that with" making the comparison elements of equal rank).

I'd actually like to see the data supporting that claim!

Yes, in the right alloy, cobalt has great magnetic properties. Cobalt's chemical element abbreviation, Co, is part of the name of the slugs in Toasters (as well as in other famous manufacturer's pickups): AlNiCo. The price you pay for that increased magnetic interaction is that cobalt is harder than nickel, so you risk premature fret wear. Also, in my experience with the Ernie Ball Cobalt Rounds, they sound great at the beginning, more clank than stainless steel top end, which is a signature 4003 tone. But one day, they simply go dead - clank to thunk overnight. They don't mellow like NPS strings do. So with the cost, the risk of premature fret wear, and that they unexpectedly go dead, I didn't go further than one set.

A friend really likes these for bass and gave me some 10’s for guitar. I’ve tried them on my 350 a couple times and to my ears they played & sounded like regular EB’s.

Likewise. I had a leftover 50 round wound cobalt bass string, so I trimmed it to try on a guitar. I heard no difference on the guitar compared to a typical NPS, D'A XL.
