help identifying bass
Looking for help determining 4001v63 possible year of manufacture. Pots and wiring are not factory. Jack plate is an xxx replacement. Sticker on underside of pickguard says bass was repainted in 2000. Horseshoe is much hotter than toaster. Opinions? Real? Fake? Possible value? Plays great. Sounds great. attachment=0]r6.jpg[/attachment]
Re: help identifying bass
The tuners and other components look correct for the model and period of manufacture. A picture of the back of the bass would be helpful. Specifically, a picture of the area where the neck joins the body.
Re: help identifying bass
Here ya go folks. hope this helps.

The body looks right to me.
The guard isn't original, IMO.
Nut's been changed.

Looks genuine though.
Hot horseshoe was par for the course back in the day.

Re: help identifying bass
Considering that all the pots, caps and wiring are not original, and the finish is not original, the guard and nut being swapped out wouldn't surprise me. I'm beginning to think something bad might have happened to this bass that generated all the non factory work.
Do you know what years the "hot" horseshoes were produced? I'd love to come up with a ballpark date of manufacture for this bass. I've heard some folks can guess a ballpark date (decade?) by the shape of the headstock but I'm not one of them.
Re: help identifying bass
Pretty sure all the V63's had the hot HS (excluding the first few that had HS made with leftover vintage parts). Vintage spec HS came out with the C64's.

It may be the angle, but I thought the guard on my '90 looks slightly more blobby.
PS. please excuse the lack of proper JPS knob alignment! That has been corrected since this picture was taken.
