Rickenbacker 4005V - British Racing Green

Post by nixdad »

Hi Everyone -
Now that Jeff Scott has shared with me how to successfully post photos, I thought I'd share a few of my British Racing Green 4005V which I purchased in July 2024.

Here's the backstory:

In late 2023 I had heard that Rickenbacker had indeed intended to relaunch the 4005, so at that point my radar was on high alert about ANYTHING regarding the 4005. I had seen the photo of the Montezuma Amberburst(?) model which was shown at NAMM that January, and was determined to not miss out this time around.

I was aware by that time that the standard colors for the reissue were going to be Fireglo, Jetglo and Mapleglo, but had also heard some rumors that a few custom color 4005V's had indeed been built.

In early 2024 Eddie's Guitars posted their Rickenbacker Factory Tour video, which showed both a British Racing Green (BRG) and Satin Autumnglo 4005V in the video thumbnail (as seen in the photo below.)

Over the next several months I constantly watched Rickenbacker's social media for any word about the BRG bass, and in July 2024 information was finally posted about both basses being sent to Dealers for sale. I found out which dealers the basses had been shipped to, and luckily, the first one I contacted had just received the BRG bass the day before. I purchased the bass immediately.

Although the bass was gorgeous with the white pickguard and TRC, I knew the BRG would really pop with gold plates. I already had a gold TRC which I was able to locate 10 years before, so I then had Tony from Pickguardian make me a new pickguard with the same gold paint. To me, the results are stunning.

I gig with the bass in my acoustic/electric Beatles band, and couldn't be happier. The secret to really bringing out the voice of these babies is to string with flats (I use TI flats on all of my Rics.) The Chef's Kiss is running the bass through the JHS Punchline - what an amazing piece of gear. 8)

Chris

Very cool one, I played this bass at RIC when they first started exploring the 4005 re-introduction. It might be the only one in BRG.

Though I have to say, it looks far better with white plastics than the gold. Just my opinion of course. The white matches the binding nicely.

Kenny - I'd love to see it! Can you post a photo?
Also - Is it original or refinished?

Thanks,
Chris

I have both sets, so who knows, I may reinstall the white set sometime in the future!

Here's the picture I took of Kenny's refinished 4005 back in '05, I think. It's a deep dark translucent green but looks almost black in photos:

That was shot on the couch in the lobby of the hotel where the SoCal Rickenbacker Confluence was taking place, Saturday August 25, 2007. I remember the TVs in the bar had coverage of Hurricane Katrina going on. That's where I met you, John Hall, Dane Wilder, Gary Clausen and many others. I shot several of the shots for my book at that meeting, and talked to JH about my book.

It's Translucent Green, a factory color at the time on the 4004, and it was done at RIC HQ when I worked there.

Very cool! Which years were you at Rickenbacker, and what was the original color of the bass?
