Anyone know anything about the Ampeg V4BH amplifier?

Post by squirebass »

I was looking for a V4B back in the early aughts, found a V4BH on craigslist at a decent price, figured it was about the same thing, so I bought it. At first I figured it was practically the same as a V4B but now I've heard that this amp was designed to be a V4 that responded more like an SVT, which piqued my interest in this amp. But other than that, there is ZERO information about them out there on the worldwide interwebs. Mine is a '90s model, made by Saint Louis Music. I love the amp, its always performed well for me, and seems plenty loud, but I'd like to know more about it. Anyone own one of these or have any info to pass on?

Is this the modern one with only one indicator light on the front panel, or an earlier version with the proper two light setup?

The one I have has only one light, but it turns red or green depending on whether standby is engaged. Its the '90s one that was manufactured during the time when Ampeg was owned by St Louis Music.

Have you checked out Talkbass? There is a ton of info on that amp in that forum.

I went there first, but then I found that they have gone to a subscription service at Talkbass, at $100 a year and frankly a lot of the back-biting I've seen over there made me hope I could find an answer here...

You do not need to be a supporting member (SM) to be a member and use the forum. Not sure where you got the idea you had to be SM. And, in general, it is a very friendly, helpful place.

The bass forum at Harmony Central used to be a great community, until it died. Now, talkbass appears to be the only place to be.

The 90s ones are more like a 100W SVT as I recall. It's sort of like how the early Rickenbacker reissues weren't quite as accurate as the later ones. The preamp from the 90s era ones is practically the same as on the SVTs of the same era.
