I've sold things that were paid for using PayPal and left the money in it to pay for things I've bought weeks later. I've even collected interest on the money I've left in till I used it to buy something else on EBay. Again, I've never had a problem with the service.

Lately I'm shy about using eBAY, not only because of the rate raise, but also because of the scams going on right now. PAYPAL sucks.

I think e-bay is a great outlet to otherwise obscure items. Prior to this you might see one or two used Ricks in town over the course of months. In remote areas you may never see one - ever. I now can look at a dozen a day at any given time and not deal with quirky music stores anymore. I admit it has really inflated the prices on everything, and you really need to be savvy and cautious, but I have gotton some otherwise killer deals. As far as selling my own gear where else could I go except consignment or newspaper ad? Wants to deal with that anymore if you have to unload stuff quick! We have become jaded and spoiled, but who umoungst our ranks doesn't check the 'bay daily in the hopes of a killer BIN?
No matter where you go - there you are.

You can't blame Ebay and PayPal for the phishing scams going on. The same thing happens with credit card companies and banks too.

Ebay and Paypal need some regulation IMHO. They will do things with your money without asking or telling you, like withdrawing your money left in paypal for ebay fees, stuff like that. They think that they own your money and are free to do with it as they see fit. I like ebay but I don't trust it and think it has a very cumbersome communication process, I think of paypal as convenient but dangerous and risky.

I ususally transfer money immediately from Paypal to my bank account, but someone told me that that doesn't really matter.....they can get to it somehow. I don't know if that's true, but it's scary stuff...

I use Paypal , but with great caution

The only problems that I have heard of with Paypal seem to all stem some sort of scam.....not Paypal itself. There are plenty of good ways for someone to be tricked out of their password if they aren't careful and I think this is the root of most problems. I'm suspicious of everything and have seen some pretty nice looking "tricks" involving Paypal and I wouldn't be surprised if plenty of people fall for them and in doing so give someone else access to their credit/money.

"I believe the rate increase on Ebay is for people with Ebay stores, not the general public"

Here is an e-mail I got yesterday from Ebay:

Dear eBay Seller,

Recently, we announced fee changes taking effect on February 18th and affecting certain optional listing upgrades on eBay.com, the subscription fee for a Basic eBay Store, and Final Value Fees on Store Inventory Format listings. Based on Community input, we understand our original communication was a bit unclear.

To clarify, no changes are being made to the Final Value Fees on Auction-style, Auction with Buy It Now option, and Fixed Priced listings (with the exception of certain Business & Industrial capital equipment categories). Final Value Fee changes apply only to Store Inventory Format listings, a listing format only available to Store sellers and with durations of 30, 60, 90, and 120 days and Good 'Til Cancelled.

The Final Value Fees for Auction-style listings, Auction with Buy It Now option, and Fixed Price listings have remained unchanged since 2002.

You can view the full details of the pricing announcement here.

Regards,
