Initially I was dubious about not being able to replicate the 4001 sound entirely, so I needed a Ric bass that I could slap, make big rock/blues tones with and keep that 4001 clank/twang, rolled into one.
It does the lot, effortlessly; especially aided with a decent preamp and some effects.
If I could discribe it in one sentence, it's like an EB-3 crossed with a 4001. It has the best of both worlds, tonally.
Congrats Henny, she's a real looker. I have a couple questions for anybody in the know:
1) The neck on my '93 Cheyenne is wider across the 12th fret and bridge than any of my other Ricks. From the RIC website measurements, it looks like the CheyenneII might be narrower and more like the 4003. Does anybody have both a Cheyenne and a Cheyenne II to confirm?
2) The Laredo is offered in any of the Rick colors. So what is the difference between it and the CheyenneII? Is it just the chrome hardware vs. gold? So...would a Laredo in trans red look exactly like a CheyenneII in trans red but have chrome hardware? Same figured wood?
The Laredo is made of solid Maple, just like the 4003S, with a the smoother 4004 body shape of course.
The CII body is made of a Maple/Walnut sandwich, which determines why they're generally regarded to be a lot more heavy/boomy, thunderous than the Laredo - which is brighter and twangy.
As far as I know, the three Special colours, (tranny red/blue/green) are only available on the CII, but I *think* they apply to the Laredo now, too.
"Would a Laredo in trans red look exactly like a CheyenneII in trans red but have chrome hardware? Same figured wood?" -
From the Laredos I've seen, the maple would definitely have less flame/figure to it. Laredo's don't feature Walnut headwings, either.
But, without a doubt - my next bass is a Laredo... in Blueburst!
I own both Cheyenne versions and the Ci is wider across the fingerboard than the Cii. Both Cheyenne necks have a slightly thinner profile than my 4003. Actually, my Cii seems like the most comfortable of the group to play. It's also slightly brighter than the Ci.
That' s nice-looking bass, Henny! I just received mine in tranny blue through an Ebay purchase. I think the thread is still around.
If you think all is going well, you've obviously overlooked something.

Hey Jeff T,
I just looked into this not long ago. The Laredo is only available in standard colors, none of the translucent colors are available. My suspicion [not confirmed] is that RIC uses nicer maple to make the Cheyenne in the translucent finsh. Others have commented that there is a slight difference in sound between the Cii and the L. I have a 4004Cii in tranny green that kicks butt, but I am in the process of purchasing chrome hardware to change over to a shy-RAY-doe.
