A Great Way to Spend a Sunday Morning

Post by highway_star »

I slept in a little this morning (8:00 am), made the kids breakfast and then settled in for a nice prcatice session. I hadn't played my v63 for a while, so I pulled it out of the closet and sat down with the tab for "Smoke on the Water". I tell you, I like the v63 with Roto flats! It still has a good bit of the famous Ric "clank" to it, but with a slightly mellower sound. I'm enjoying this! Once I have "Smoke" mastered a little more, I'm moving onto "Space Truckin'".

You gotta learn Highway Star. I could never get through that whole song with a pick.

That's on my future "to do" list. I'm doing the other two songs for an upcoming jam and want to master them first. I have the basics to "Highway Star" already and have to learn the fills.

That song takes physical fortitude, haha! I can play it but not with a pick. I'd have to practice and practice to be able to play that song with a pick.

All my Rickenbacker basses sound great with Chromes. No more roundwounds for me.

I recently used my V63 to record "The Ocean" , which is one of my favorite Zepplin tunes. For the heck of it, I tried using my favorite Rick bass tone which is the Squire/Lee bright and ballsy. I would have otherwise used a more JPJ type of tone. I expected the recording to turn out a little nasty and probably obnoxious because of the bass tone but to my surprise it sounded great. My V63 gets DR rounds like most of my basses. The VRI horseshoe just sings with rounds!

Yes you can still get that snarl with chromes if you want it, especially on a 4001.

THe Smoke tab came from the "Bass Tab White Pages" book. The "Space Truckin'" tab cam from Talkbass.com.

Yup, Pictures of Home is my favorite too Chris, with that awesome bass solo. Simple and at the same time genious. Highway Star is a close second. I also love Fireball because it was the first record (vinyl!) I ever bought as a kid.

I've been learning Green Day, Hoobustank, Nickelback, 3 doors down, Jet ... and sometimes my band does some old stuff ... like Creed ... or sometimes we do some really old stuff ... like 80's music ...
