That bass, it's tones & the songs it was involved in had a profound effect on me & my decision to play a Rickenbacker bass.

I was never a big DP fan as a kid, but wouldn't turn the station if they came on. I really didn't know Glover used a RIC until recently, however.

Kind of ironic, as back then I tried hard to have a sound like Geddy or Squire (which is IMO very tough to mimic without their talents), and my present sound is probably closer to Glover's.

If I were Glover I'd send it to RIC, I'm sure they'd be happy to restore it for him.

I remember some discussion about Roger Glover's 4001 a while back.

It's fair to assume the Ist photo below is the one being restored, but are the other two pics the same bass?

If I remember rightly Roger used the Jetglo 4001 with stock pickups on the Machine Head album and some time shortly after added the slanted jazz pickups.
Did he some time later switch the jazz pups for the humbucker, which would have meant replacing the pickguard?

I think you're probably correct Martin (I believe the pickups in the "Trace Elliot" ad are Bartolinis). Either way I really hope it works out. Roger (along with Glenn Hughes) was a big early influence of mine, and his playing from this era is still some of my favourite. I LOVE early Purple.

I'll be interested to see how it turns out actually, having just had my 72 4001 brought back to life by putting in one of Sergio's treble pickups. In the last few years it had been struggling (when I bought it I thought it had the best sound of any Rick I'd ever played by a long way; in fact it sounds very similar to Glover's bass, if you take into account the difference in amplification), and it had been retired for everything bar recording. Now its like a new instrument. Hopefully the same thing will happen with Rog's bass. Maybe Sergio could make him some new pickups!

I'd love to see Roger with the Ric back in action.

In recent years he favors Vigier basses and although fine basses they don't look as cool as the Ric!

Nice to see that he obviously still cares for it enough to get it restored.

I remember as a kid, my brother would play "Machine Head", and I would hear that opening bass line to Smoke on the Water, I just loved it. I often wondered why he stopped using it. Once again, IMO, a great bass player playing a Rick. That's when he sounded his best. Thanks Roger, I hope you bring her back to recording and playing live.
