I would agree--it's a fake--but when it comes right down to it, I don't care what bass brand he plays, as long as he keeps playing.

The price of fame. He's over at a buddies house, picks up a bass lying around, someone shoots a picture, now he's a traitor. Or for practice sake, he's not going to haul "the one" around in the trunk of his car so he has a beater. Squire could make a rubber band and a broom stick sound good. That's why celebs' don't want their picture taken when they're going to get the paper or something. Everybody say's geez he's fat (or plays a fake Rick.)

(it would be funny of he WAS rehearsing with a broomstick, though.)

Back to the bass at hand. Hard to see from the pic if it really has a skunk-stripe neck. If so then it's bolt-on or set-neck. You can see twin truss-rod adjusters. Im going to guess it's not a stiped neck but you see the shadow of the headstock route. I wonder how he likes the lack of horseshoe or treble cover since he seems to favor a pick.

Don't want to worry you guys but I seem to remember a relatively recent Rotosound ad which showed some early pics of Chris stringing up a faker....(not this one though!)

Mark, I think Wes was being sarcastic.....but then so were you probably Image. I'll get my coat....

You know, the web is a funny thing.

You can construct a sentence and it's possible for one to take it in many different ways - the lack of intent or emotion in straight text, etc.

Thank goodness for smilies.

Sorry wes, I'm now sure you weren't being miserable! Image

This is starting to remind me of the other thread here where everyone wants Geddy Lee to start playing a Rick again. My wife thought that thread was so funny that she coined a new word.."RickenTrekkies". At least I did order a copy of the Syn's album from the site. Has anyone here heard it and what's it like?

My point was exactly lighten up (sarcasim.) I'm saying give the guy a break and I followed up with 'this is why public figures become so reclusive.' Sorry it didn't translate so well across the pond mate. Before I read Dane above I was going to comment on just that.

Hahaha..

Well, I'm by no means a RickenTrekky! Image

I love all kinds of basses inc. Ricks. F$nders, Lakland, Alembic, all fan-diddly-tastic.

But, there are many factors as to why Geddy should/shouldn't use his Ric.

My reasons for it are pure and simple: That bass sounded better than any other he played. Even if that bass was some awful "Orfeus" (snigger) Soviet thing, I'd strongly encourage him to use it.

It's wow.

Squire is what Squire is, but I'm firmly in the Geddy camp for early influences. Funny in the Sansamp magazine ad, Geddy says (I'm paraphrasing) '...it helps me get my old Rickenbacker sound...', or something to that effect. Yeah, so would playing your old Rickenbacker. I respect Lee more for pushing the bass envelope over the years and crafting his sound as opposed to playing Trees on the Rick at every concert. If a 4001 neck doesn't tour well over 30 years as we can imagine, so be it. Now on a strictly reunion tour playing the old stuff, I agree it would be cool to see him whip it out for a few songs. I'll bet Fender would have a say in that however!

Fender would probably just stop giving him free backup basses, you know, the ones that sit on stands behind him all night while he plays the one he bought 35 years ago in a pawn shop BEFORE he got the big advance money from Mercury and started playing Rickenbackers.

Dane, good point. Do you know for sure that the '72 Jazz he plays has been with him since then? I know he has several. Discussed here before, the Geddy signitures are **** pure and simple. However I bet there's a little something in it for Lee beside stage props!

Geddy got his Jazz around 1979, right around when Rush was recording Permanent Waves. He had a Precision bass before the Ricks, which got recut and refinished into the infamous teardrop bass as soon as he got his Ricks.

How did this turn into a Geddy bashing thread? He loves his old pawnshop Jazz bass, pure and simple. That's the bass that does it for him. Those other Jazzes from Fender do get use. One is in drop-D tuning (for songs like Driven) and an other is tuned down a whole step (for use on 2112).
