Martin,

My guess is that the pictures are of the same bass. They all show full length inlays.

I read an interview with Roger Glover recently where he was talking about remastering some of Deep Purple's albums and how he didn't like his bass sound and wanted to go in and re-record his bass tracks but the engineer he was working with talked him out of it. He told Roger that his sound was classic and represented a character sound of the time and that guys now spend thousands of dollars trying to recreate that sound.

... Did he some time later switch the jazz pups for the humbucker, which would have meant replacing the pickguard?

The slanted J pickups mod must have necessitated cutting a new guard. So perhaps the later humbucker mod was done with the original pickguard.

Hey Chris, sorry, missed your post...no, haven't kept up with Glenn for a long time now (so many artists, so little time!) but I aim to asap. Got to say, I know it's really seventies but the pics of him with his Rick on "Made in Europe" (never mind the sound) blew me away when I first saw them; I wish I looked half that cool!

Shaun, small point of order - Glenn Hughes was the bassist on "Made in Europe", but still had a Ric. Glover was on "Made in Japan". I'm sure that's what you meant.

Glenn has still got it. He seems to have finally put all of his personal demons behind him. I saw him in Iowa last year for the Tommy Bolin Festival & he was incredible. His latest record & DVD are both very good, a return to form if you will. I wish he'd play Ricks again, but he just got his signature model bass from Manne Guitars out of Italy.
The Rick tone on "Sail Away" off of the Burn LP still blows me away...

I saw Tommy Bolin in 1969 in Boston. Nothing to do with Glover's bass but what the hey.

Ron, I think that's what I said!

My second sentence references my first, as in "haven't kept up with Glenn (Hughes) for a long time, and BTW the pics of him and his Rick on Made in Europe" etc. Sorry if it wasn't clear! Don't worry, I've just about worn out my copy of "Europe", so I'm pretty sure I know who's on it

I always thought Rog looked cool too, but not half as cool as Glenn!

BTW, I love Rog too as I've already said....

Well maybe Glover's renewed interest in his old 4001 is a good opportunity for RIC to introduce a signature model... "4001RG" - v71 Jetglo... checkerboard binding, full width inlays, hi-gain and toaster - ½ inch spacing of course - plexi TRC, modern truss rods and no bass choke capacitor.
