Vintage Tuner Replacement?

Post by popster »

I have a reissue RIC and the tuners that came with the guitar do not work well at all. Are there good replacement tuners available that fit?

There are two things that you can do ,first you need to address what type of instrument you have ;

a 12 string

a bass

a six string

then do they have Schaller tuners or Kluson type tuners .

After that info ;

is it under warranty ?
out of warranty?

Next I'll give you some info ,see you then.
So you too want yours "ALAPWOB"?!?!

The guitar is a six string with Kluson type tuners...you know the problem way to much play before you get any resistance. A couple of them are really bad. The guitar is out of warranty.
Thanks a lot.

My cheap advice is this .

For direct replacement tuners ,Gotoh brand style Kluson's are tough to beat .I have them on all my old Fenders and all of my Gibsons .They require the use of a #1 phillips screw driver ...thats all .

You can get into a set of Schaller tuners or Gotoh style Schaller tuners ,but you would need to enlarge the hole and the screw hole pattern will not match .

BEWARE!!!!! there are Korean and Taiwanese tuners that look almost exactly like the Gotoh tuners .
The Gotoh made tuners say on the back of the casing ...Made in JAPAN.

The other do not have the point of origin.

One more option ,call Rickenbacker and get a set of (custom made for Rick ) Schaller Kluson style tuners.

By the way ...I have had tuners of all brands and all costs go bad on me ...it is not just cheap tuners .

Better order quick, as there are precious few Schaller's left kicking around. We switched to Gotohs a long time ago.

Less than a year ago ,when we were discussing bridge placement and a certain Carl Wilson 12 string ...you stated that Schaller was making for you long shaft Kluson style tuners .Are those no longer being used ?

Are you now using Gotoh on everything ?

Is this because of Rene's death?

What would you advise this person to do?

There are still some Schaller keys being used here but we are slowly making the transition to using Gotoh exclusively. Unfortunately neither the quality nor the reliability of supply is being met by the current management of Schaller.

We were particularly incensed that the Germans could not deliver an accurate Sta-tite repro key, after spending an inordinate amount of time on the project.

Keywinds are not like Gummi Bears; that statement makes sense if you know all the industry history.
