I had a toaster in my fretless 3000 for a brief time and it sounded OK. I swapped in a RIC humbucker just to see if there was a difference and it was like putting it on stearoids. Way fatter sound and definitely louder. I would only use a toaster on a guitar or for a more vintage sound on a V63 or C64...IMHO of course.

In my bass, no they are not active. I don't know if one of the Bart preamps work with them of not. I didn't research it since I figured it would require routing of the pot area and that is something I am not willing to do to a Ric.....besides they sound great passive.

just add a bart where the mute goes. that would keep it looking the same with a small bit of tonal difference

I had a toaster in the neck position on my 4001, and put a hi gain in there, and I like the high gain better. It has more low end a bit less percussiveness. It also matches the volume of the bridge pickup better.
