Where did you get your 4005

How did you get RIC to refin the 4005? As far as I know, the custom shop closed a long time ago. How much did they charge?

Maybe JH felt pity for me? As far as the refin price, back in '99 RIC offered their refin services for about $350. That was a steal in my book.

I got mine in '73 from a bassist in a local band. He wanted a Jazz Bass and I wanted a Rickenbacker, so we swapped basses. I paid $175.00 for the Jazz Bass, so in effect, that is what I paid for my '67 4005WB.

The last one I saw for sale was when I brought Joe to Chris so that Chris could buy that lovely 4005WB from him! Two weeks ago.

And they are all lovely....JW's BB is seriously impressive to my eyes just for that great finish that I think works real well on the big bass. It is a one off, but then again chances are the WB's could be too!
It would be sweet if JH let the extra spray cans out to play again. I think we'll be looking at a little more than $350 tho'...

John forgot about the checked re-binding we did to correct the bungled job that "someone" took a year and a half to do.

I found mine (67 fg) on harmony central want adds about 1 1/2 years ago for a reasonable sum....It had been altered with bart pups and when I got it there were rick re-issue toasters on it so there is some damage to the front...the barts were included in the case...It has small rubber surrounds (about 1/8" showing all the way around each pup to cover the mod/hack) so it looks pretty stock except to the likes of you Forumites!! Original case, bridge cover and replacement rick tuners....The best deal I ever saw on ebay was about 2 years ago...there was an under the bed fg closet classic in near mint condition case included, that went for $2300 (I think) with a buy it now...I looked at it and thought about 5 minutes about it and refreshed the page to hit the bin and it was sold!! That's what I get for thinking!

I bought my first 4005 in London, I think it was New Kings Road vintage guitars (?) - they found it in the USA, and emailed me asking if I was interested for £895 (it had a further 72 toaster pickup added in the body, but the bass is a 74) I arrived to pick it up when it reached here and they immediately offered to buy it back at a profit since someone had seen it in the shop and wanted it too! Its now on permanent loan to my niece!!Then I got a 79 Jetglo on ebay, I think from the USA but possibly the UK (its in fantastic condition)..then a blue 74 bass bought in the UK from LOOT advert on the internet... then John Entwistle's 67 mapleglo (the story of that one is in the 4004 8 string thread!), then by a total fluke I opened Loot newspaper in the papershop stifling a yawn while my wife shopped, and there was a fireglo 4005 (judging by the pots its late 67 or 68 - the jackplate's replaced...)near me in Croydon, also £895! I shot round there like a rat up a pipe and it was mine before the bloke regained consciousness.... Its been VERY knocked about for the last 38 years, but that's "vintage vibe" for you!

Based on what we've seen here and on ebay , it looks like the '67s are prevelant. In the back of one of my RIC books there are production numbers for each model/finish, etc..., but for '67 there is NO info!! What happened that there is no info?

Back in the early 70's at a Music Store in the Northridge Mall in the San Fernando Valley I saw my first 4005 , it was MG finish & made quiet an impression on me because I call Rickenbacker up & got a catalog right away in fact last time I came accross it there were 4005 order prices from Valley Arts Guitar & another Music Store I scribbled on it ($ 629?-679?) anyway years later a Friend found one in the "Recycler" a free ad paper that if you lived in L.A. was what you hunted Guitars with before the days of the internet, he found a primer Black 1965 4005 for $300 & got it to as he put "Save" , his idea was to re-do it MG however when removing the pickguard the awful dull Black paint stuck to the PG reveling the original FG finish underneath over the next few days he got all the Black off , he knew I always want a 4005 so he held on to it & I got it around 1983-85 & would not take more then the $300 he paid for it,

Oh man, Jaime! That is SWEET!! What a great story, too!

My story is so....so COLD, compared to you guys'...
My first one was just a cold , hard, run for daylight, pay a HUGE wad of cash while gritting my teeth and saying "I really, really want it!" to myself over and over....hardly a love story.....

Chris I was just lucky it kind of fell in my lap when it did because I know I couldn't afford one these days , we should be thankful we were able to find any 4005 cause they don't seem to turn up often , one day I'd love to find out just how many 4005 Basses have been made year by year & the total number produced ,

Yes, that is correct. And RIC did a great job on the binding as well. The bass looks and feels absolutely brand new.

PS: Someone recently emailed me about a 4005 project that are thinking about selling. I should have pics soon. I believe that it is a '70's model as it has Hi-Gains.
