I remember JH asked before about had I played/heard a 4005...I must admit I have never played one and only heard a few - but what I heard I loved - personally I love that rich, warm, mellow tone...add to that it's coming from the most gorgeous bass.

So cmon 4005ers how do they play/sound for you guys?

now that would be a cool bass!!! I did have an Alembic (Persuader) that was real cool, the laminates on the nxk and the bird's eye maple front and back were cool.

But man the shape and the sound John hammered out of that type of bass gives me chills....

I had an Alembic Spoiler with a Flamed Koa top and the Exploiter shape. The neck seemed so long as the bass was naturally positioned too far to the left when strapped on. It did balance very well, though. I had it made into a fretless and it sounded excellent but it was sold to pay for my first Zon Sonus Special 5 string fretless.

Up close, Alembics are something of a spiritual experience. Every little detail is perfectly executed. I love my Ricks, past, present, and future, but there is an undeniable perfection that is present even in the lower line Alembics. They are not for everybody. No instrument is. But you have to take your hat off to the workmanship the Alembic team produces.

I'm rushing through these posts to catch up (as a new boy) and couldn't help noticing the alembics mentioned, and must confess I have an Entwistle model, and what they call a triple Omega design bass. My heart will always belong to Rickenbacker (sigh, etc) but the Entwistle bass is one heavy/ crazy/beautiful thing and really I had to get one since I'm such a sad obsessed Who fan! They do what they do the best, but UNLIKE a Rickenbacker (which ALWAYS provokes a great reaction) I must warn that an Entwistle Alembic WILL provoke a "beat that poser up" factor of about 9.8 in a drunk audience...

I,ve wanted a Series one Alembic, most possibly a fretless or a 5 string for a while now. I wish they appealed a little more visually to me. If only Ric would do that to the 4004, ebony board, 24 frets, a practical contemporary bass to go with the outstanding modern aesthetics...
Alembic are still are the yardstick for all other basses. I read a posting somewhere about a custom luthier who builds high end basses talking to a potential customer who told him he currently had an Alembic, to which he replied "Why would you want one of mine then?"....
