Any thoughts on the Laguna?

Post by bluespckr »

Now that I've gotten my first Ric -- a 360/6 MG (something I should have done 40 years ago) -- I'm toying with the idea of ordering a 380L Laguna. Does anybody have any experience with them (silly question), and could you please share your thoughts with me, in answer to my 100th post!

I love mine. I've got the PZ option, and next to my 381 it's my most used Ric. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to run the magnetic and PZ pick-ups into a single amp, but once I do that, I expect that it will surpass the 381 in overall usage.

Here's what I like about my 380L: i) combination of HB's and PZ make it extremely versatile, especially if clean sounds are your stock in trade; ii) very light weight; iii) very comfortable neck profile; and, iv) a very fast neck thanks to the tung oil finish.

The only reservation a prospective 380L owner might have about buying one is that it does not sound like a traditional Rickenbacker. In fact, it doesn't sound like any guitar I've ever played (including other piezo equipped guitars). It has its own unique sound. Playing one before you buy is pretty much impossible, so it's a bit of a gamble. In my case, it paid off.

Thanks, John,
I do have the 360 which gives me all the traditional Ric sound a guy might want, so the idea of a humbucker/piezo equipped Ric -- capable of the things you mentioned -- really appeals to me.
Thanks for the feedback.

Hey Bob. Why not bring us up to date with regard to your current Rickenbackers in addition to the 380LPZ and the 330/12.

I have the 380, a 610MG, and a 370/12MG with toasters, Kluson reissues, 12-saddle, vintage nameplate, and a few extra RM goodies that I have scored over the years (I located a loose 370/12RM compressor thanks to this very forum). That's all I have right now but I plan to expand again in the future. I also have a 370/12RM signed by the man himself, and a 330/12JG, both for sale.

I second that, John. I'd buy three: Fireglo, Mapleglo, and Blueburst. What a great looking guitar that would be.
