Update to Richard R. Smiths book!

Does anyone know if there has been an update to the Rickenbacker book by Richard R. Smith that includes the 2020, 2060 and the 4004 series basses? Or another one which includes them!

Not in any detailed way Warren. There are bits and pieces in sources such as Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars, for example, but nothing definitive. There is also catalogue information on the Rickenbacker Registration Page with regard to the 2000 series basses.

I wouldnt mind starting 2020 and 2060 (or just the 2000 series) register to try and ascertain just how many are around the world, although there are no guarantees anyone would join! Im just really interested to find out approx. how many were sold and in what colours! Maybe someone on here with a passion for 2000 series basses would be willing to help! And maybe even a 4004 register too. I must say Im surprised a lot more people with these basses havent made it here from the net from around the world!

Some time ago there was another thread here on the Forum concerning books about Rickenbackers, and the Smith book was talked about; IIRC John Hall said that there were no plans on the table with Richard Smith to update the book, and other reasons were cited at the time as well. Unfortunately, I think the thread has been lost to the ages---no archive exists of it that I can see..

Much water has gone under the bridge since the Smith book was written, many new instruments and finds to talk about and look at.

Its a shame as other people have written newer books and other manufacturers like Fender, Gibson and Gretsch. But there again Ricks are more unique!

I haven't keep up with Richard so much but he's changed careers somewhat. After obtaining a degree in curatorial science, he now puts it to good use at the Fullerton Museum, this being his current project.

I also seem to recall that his publisher relationship wasn't wonderful, precluding a revision. He self published his second book, I would assume based on his unsatisfactory experience.

John, if any of us were willing to undertake such a task, would we get some help and cooperation from your good self and rickenbacker! As there seems to be much to write about, including a lot of newer products from yourselves!
