How about a Rickenbacker Bass book?

Post by bassduke49 »

OK, I don't want to be held to this, but I've been thinking about taking on this project for about a year now. I've got the Bacon Rickenbacker guitar book and the Smith book, and I think there is room for a book on Rick basses only.
I've been thinking that this would be a great project for my retirement, to keep me busy and enthused as I drift into my "fogey" years. Looks like I'll retire from my magazine editor career during the summer of '06. I'm a trained photographer as well, and enjoy doing research and I type like the wind! I've got fairly good contacts and I don't think I've ****** anybody off (yet), so maybe I just could write and compile the Rick Bass bible. I'd have to tap a lot of you guys (and gals?) for specifics and photos of certain types. Perhaps with John Hall's cooperation and, dare I say "blessing," we could all finally have a book on our favorite low-frequency modulation generators.

Watcha think?

Paul, would love to see it happen. Would take a lot of cooperation from RIC to make it really happen, though. Everyone seems to want production numbers, the one-offs, the prototypes, and they are the only real source of that info. I'd love to see you get into that, though, I know it would turn out very well.

I think its a great idea too, as long as the 2060, 2020 and 4004's are covered Im happy, oh as well as important artist who have used them to get their unique sound! And I think it makes sense now doing it just on basses, and leaving guitars, although I love Ricky guitars, that way it could be done properly and in full!

I've often thought a Rick bass-only book would be a great idea. I'd gladly pay for that.

A leftie section. Hmm. Maybe I can get the printer to put all that section's type in backwards and insert a mirrored mylar sleeve so us righties can read it!

As a 30 plus year player, collector and passionate, Rick bass junky,I would love to contribute in any way I could. I've owned, and sold well over 30 4001 and 4003 models and still own 7.
Rick bass fanatic. I own and play several professionally. I have a passion for the S models.

Paul, a Rick bass book would be great!! You can use pictures of my Rick basses if you would like, you can take them right off my website. I should be posting better pics of them on there soon. I'm starting to get better at taking pictures of them...I'm no Paul Yan yet, but they are getting better. Of course your bass will need a great photo of my 4004/5Cii somewhere...maybe the centerfold?!? Image

There's another great idea: A centerfold with a naked bass; no strings, electronics, or hardware. Just naked wood. Flip the fold-out over, and you get the back side.

Think anyone would "get" it?

Sign me up for a couple of copies! I have always been impressed with Smith's access to vintage info and photos. Hopefully you too will be able to get Rickenbackers blessing for this exciting endeavor. Bass players of the world eagerly await...
