The B series bass is a set neck 4001S with toaster neck pickup and nothing more that I can see from the B series promo sheet I have. It is called the 4003SB in the flyer, it has the Shedua strip down the neck which does not go through the body. Everything looks exactly like that of a set neck 4001S, the pickguard, chrometop controls, bridge, 1" toaster placement, high gain pickup cover, dots on fingerboard, everything!

Look at the photo on p.164 of Smith's book and you will see the ad photo which is the same as the promo sheet I have. Bob's bass is certainly NOT a B series bass, more likely a working prototype towards the final version of the V63 series bass.

bob, whatever the story, it is not your run of the mill bass its got us all stumped along with mitches its one of those unique basses out there. ask jh if a repo horseshoe was available as an option or even being made when your bass was.

Hi all. I cannot seem to reduce my pictures for the Forum posting, but I will accurately describe the 4003SB. If it does not have these features, it is NOT an SB model.
1) headstock stocky and shorter, not sleek like the V63
2) toaster 1/2" away from neck
3) Truss rod adjustment @ bottom of neck, not headstock
4) High-gain treble picky, no horseshoe
5) Rick-o-sound input, NOT MONO.
6) body is thicker than any Rick I own.
7) Maple glo ONLY for color
8) Standard treble pickup surround, not V63 type.
Rick bass fanatic. I own and play several professionally. I have a passion for the S models.
