I just call mine what they are....either by color, year or tuning. Nothing real complicated there. I would say that the few Rics (3) that I have each are more than just a bass to me....there is an emotional attachment for them but I don't come up with names.

My 4001 is "The Rick"...the 650 Dakota is "The Rickenbacker"...

But now with the Fireglo Laredo on the way, not sure how that will evolve. Image

I haven't named my guitars, but I have named various analytical instruments over the years. At one time I had instruments named Sarah, Leela, and Tegan (those not familiar with the Doctor Who series will not get that!).

A colleague of mine who now works at BBC Resources informed me ages ago that it was coming back, 3D special effects and all..

Is it still in post-production or what?

Guitars named for Beatle songs are enough to keep me from registering my Ricks at rick registry. :-) Can you imagine a conversation like this. "Honey, I have a gig tonight can you pull twist and shout out of the closet for me?" "No dear, it has a broken string, you had better take And I Love Her instead." Not in my house.

Gary, did you ever have a whiny sounding guitar named Peri?!

My battle scarred 4003MD is Mindy and the Montezuma Brown is Monty - they make a great Couple....Mork isn't happy though!

Tell me does it feel the same when you've set upon a change but your heart's in the old times?

Thank goodness no, John! I would have gotten rid of that one really quickly!

If I ever have a pet dog, I probably will call it K-9 ...

thanks guys, that was a lively discussion
Always wanted to be in a band. Got recruited as a begining bass player a year ago and just bought my second bass. A 1983 white 4003. Lovin' it all.

I didn't give it this moniker, maybe one of you guys did, but my 1974 4001 is the one and only Jon Camp's "Great White", now living happily in America and every bit still a lady.

The dictionary has it listed as "girlfriend", one word; although one definitoin given is "female friend", I use the term "female friend" when talking about my friends who happen to be female because "girlfriend" can have connotations that do not apply to those friendships.

I don't know where it cane from either, but I've always known Jon's bass as "Great White". Even Pete's site names it as such. And she is definitely quite a lady!

My 4005 is named "dedgoat" - from a fellow forumite that directed me to it.
