Frank,
Yeah - i used to use a Fostex X-30 4 track tape - it was good 'till the digital units came out.
I'm now using a Korg D-12, had a roland 840, but got tired of the ZIP drive (very slow) and wanted a hard disc setup. The Korg was being discontinued and I got it very reasonably - brand new. Using a Behringer B2 and a CAD tube mic. Alesis MidiVerb 4 with Nady EQ, Behringer compressor and Vocalist VR for harmony parts. Use my Roland XP-80 board for a the keyboard, drums, bass, etc. The D-12 does have an internal CD - with SCSI for external stuff.
Man - those VS units are very cool... Just real expensive. Great choice, my man!

Mike,
I got it in a package deal for $3250 right after 9/11, it's the model w/ 80gig HD. How do you like your Vocalist VR for harmony parts? Does it sound real? Who makes it and for how much? And the Korg, hows it sound? I started to get Korg but no VGA. Now Roland makes a $2000 VS2000CD w/ VGA capabilities and 5 part harmony. I could have saved a $1000 bucks, I just needed a 17" VGA even w/ glasses.

Hey Frank,
The Vocalist VR is made by DigiTech and runs about $325 - The units from TCHelicon are much better but start out around $700 - a little rich for me. The VR does a good job and can be used in many ways. I personally like assigning the unit to a MIDI track from my XP-80 and actually "playing" the harmony parts (notes) while recording that track on my sequencer. Then, all I have to do is play back the sequence and the harmonies come in where I need them, via MIDI to the VR. Otherwise, all you hear is the lead vocal. All in all, it sounds pretty good, especially when the harmony levels are kept low (as they should be) from the lead vocal. There are other ways to use the VR (pre-sets by key signature) but I prefer MIDI control - it will also accept program changes and global messages via MIDI.
The Korg D-12 is awesome - but it ain't a Roland. I would have bought a Boss or Roland if I'd had the money, but for what I got for the price, I'm very happy. -especially since I can mix down and burn CDs or .wav files right on the machine.

Hey Michael
I don't know what's up, sucky manual, people don't buy a VGA monitor, too lazy, but I've seen VS2480s selling for as little as $2,000 on eBay lately. I can't imagine ever going back to a 4 track tape unit or even switching to all computer. I was thinking about working on the wife for that TCHelicon, so far I've been able to do my own harmonies but you can tell it's the same person singing all 3 parts. Kind of weird. I try effects and EQing to change them up but... Thanks for the info.

Frank, I hear you on the VS. I have the HD 2480; it's a nice machine. I just hooked it up with the "3" card and Antares Autotune, which I sorely need for my vox.

Anyway, as to your original question, you don't really use it. I know some folks do, and that's great. But, I don't use it.

On a somewhat related track, I love how George Harrison describes the 5th know on RICs. He said, "That tiny knob never seemed to do anything," or something like that. That's a classic quotation.

Harold,
I have 3-VS8F-2 cards and 1-VS8F-3 with Auto-Tune and the 5 plugins that came with the F-3 card. I can't tell that the tiny knob does much but I keep it in the middle position. I love my VS2480CD. I've got it setup with Input Peak at 0db w/ Peak Hold on and record my tracks at -12 to -1db. I get a good warm/hot signal and very little noise. Some say it should be set at -6db on Input because anolog 0db is digitals -18db and I should be recording as if -12db is my Peak! Any ideas, how do you do it? Frank.
