A newcomer to the world of Ricks

I'm delighted to say that yesterday, I purchased my first Rickenbacker, a 2005 360/6 VP FG.

I'm actually rather afraid to play it now, because it's so brilliant.

I've actually been reading many of the posts on this board for a few weeks now, but I hadn't bothered to register, because I figured frequenting a Rickenbacker board as an owner of a Fender Strat would be counter-productive, heh. I'm quite happy I found this place though, it seems to be one of the few places on the internet where discussion of guitar does not degenerate into flame wars or talk of how the only good guitarists play B.C. Rich.

Anyway, enough of my blathering. I'm looking forward to contributing whatever meagre opinions I have to the board.

I don't know what it is but, before I pick up my RIC to play I always wash my hands. I never thought about it before but it's true!!! Good call Howard!!!

I've given up the chicken, Paul. I now do my classic 'Electrolux' impression by 'hoovering' peanuts and fried rice off the carpet - no hands required!

Scott: Cleaning my hands before playing is now rote for me. I like to play early in the morning while I have a coffee and contemplate the day ahead (before I shower) and found early on that the neck 'stickiness' I mentioned in another thread was to a large extent due to unwashed or sweaty hands. These days I make sure that my arms are covered as well and if I'm sitting down there has to be something covering my legs other than skin and hair!

Now-a-days, I play around about 150 gigs a year, as well as a similar amount of studio days, so you can imagine that my guitars are used pretty heavily. When I get a really nice Ric in my hands, I try to keep it wrapped in cotton wool, untill it gets it's first knock....then it's treated the same as the rest!
I have noticed though that Rics are pretty hard to mark easily. For instance, I am selling my 1999 360FG, which I have used reasonably extensively & assumed that the condition would not be that great. When I had to appraise it for a description, apart from a couple of tiny dings, it looked virtually brand new. Testament to Rickenbackers superb finishing.

Howard, just ribbing you...

Rib grease is a no-no too.

Guys, talcum powder is really good to get your hands nice and dry and side up and down that glossy neck. Plus, you'll smell like a baby's freshly-changed butt. Seriously, you can get unscented at the corner chemists'.
