RRF Coming under fire

I'm sorry, but i am sick and tired of people spouting off about how everyone's opinions are valuble and then throwing a hissie-fit when everyone fails to drop their own opinion and agree. This forum has plenty of healthy, constructive debate. Just because we don't jump on the sleeze wagon everytime some troll pulls our chain doesn't mean we're a bunch of kiss@$$'s.

I found this forum through people making reference to it on the Ric Corporate forum. I'm a big Ric guitar fan and love to talk about them with others who share my love for them.

I joined shortly before the So Cal Con last year because I wanted to have the opportunity to get to know more people here before I attened that.

I did "lurk" here for about a month before I officially joined because I wanted to see what it was all about. Also, it can be intimidating to join a forum and make a post when your brand new and don't know people or what has already been discussed.

That being said, I'm very happy here, I rarely go to the Corporate forum anymore because I can usually find everything I need or want to talk about here, so I guess I can see both sides of this. I don't think there is anything wrong with different opinions and people who don't think everything with Rickenbacker instruments is perfect. It's all in how you say it.

I like my privacy and "members only" sounds like a good idea to me at this point (the "bots" scare me too - very "big Brother"), but, I may never have joined in the first place if I wasn't allowed to "lurk" for a while.

I believe the forum is set up fine the way it is. If somebody wants to add some new private sections or whatnot, I'm sure I'll get used to it. In other words, I'm not more concerned about security here than I am anywhere else. I take my own precautions, effective or not, wherever I might wish to make something available on the net.

Sadly, the things this forum needs to do to protect and maintain it's virtues can't be legislated or written into the code: Courtesy, thoughtfulness, respect, in short, good intentions acted upon to the best of our efforts. These attractions exist only in the hearts and minds of our brothers and sisters. There's no sure-fire way to check each others' intentions the way we can check our facts, so I believe it's the "village mentality" that saves us. Each one paying attention to what the other is saying, knowing about that person, knowing their concerns and caring about them as much as possible. If we build this place into a gated community, but fail to get to know and understand our fellow members, then we'll just become trapped, isolated and bickering.

As funny as the Groucho Marx comment is, I actually use that one as a guide for living. If this was more exclusive and less inclusive of a place, I probably wouldn't have joined. No, I think we need to keep it open and available, but to take the responsibility of watching and caring to make it work just like any successful family or neighborhood. It takes a village attitude to raise a consensus and reach a place where we can all agree to disagree while remaining friendly.

It's a real pity that due to a post on the Ric forum, that this thread has spread like wildfire. I know that when Kris posted this, it was only a heads up. Now, friends are having words, guys are mad, and others are leaving. Even though I realize that things such as this forum don't make or break any of us, and our lives in the real world go on regardless of what is said here, it is still such a pity.

Greg you are hilarious. You don't have to like any of those bands.........it's not a prerequisite as far as I recall for joining this forum. I like the Beatles, The Byrds produced a number of good singles and Jefferson Airplane played out of tune a lot when they played live but, you had to be there to know that..........

As a teacher, I'm often in the unenviable position of having to moderate disputes between students, student and faculty, and sometimes between faculty. One of the tenets of my classroom that I hold tightly to is that it is very easy to be the most offensive...it's also just as easy to be the most offended. Because of that, I try along with many of the others to avoid disputes, express opinions in a way that is constructive, and to post in a congenial spirit. There is no denying that in any community there will be people who will get chafed by the opinions of others. I'll support whatever happens regarding the privacy on the forum because I was once one of the outsiders who needed information about my 325/12 and there was precious little on the corporate forum. On the flipside of that, I can see the clear advantages of being able to savor some privacy, with so much being lost or forfeit in this modern world. It does suck to see some of the people who fuel and foster discussion leaving...hopefully in time they might be back.

I just realized something.
My three favourite bands are the Clash, The Pixies and the Specials.
All three bands had 2 guitar players.
The lead guitar player in each (Mick Jones, Joey Santiago and Roddy Radiation, respectively) are mainly known as Les Paul players.
The rhythm players (Joe Strummer, Frank Black and Lynval Golding) all played Telecasters.

I'm in the wrong damn forum.
