"Waters Part" is one of my all-time favorite songs. Awesome stuff.
Going ALL the way back to the first page of this thread-is Mills playing a Hamer Cruisebass? Faye Hunter played one if I recall correctly. I love those basses.

"Waters Part"?? What song would that be?

The bass seen in the first clip on the first page of this thread is a Guild Pilot, which Mike switched to (from the Rick) sometime in late '84. He then switched to a black Precision as his main bass in 1987 I believe. The on to the blonde Precision in 1995.

I can never get enough of Waters Part! Just wish I could play it. Hey Mitch -- do have a video or audio clip of you doing an acoustic version??

I first got a bit confused by it as well, but then remembered the thread;s also for a big part about Mitch and Lets Active.
Which is cool 8)

Apologies (perhaps most to Mitch). Must admit to being fairly ignorant about Let's Active's stuff, apart from having checked out a few songs on Spotify. Will dig deeper...

IT's going WAAAYY back, but the first time I saw REM (84 or very early 85), he wasn't playing a Pilot. I'm remembering a Ricky and/or a P-Bass, but the Fender could be recollections from later shows.

The Hamer is similar to the Guild appearance-wise in some respects, but much better looking, playing and sounding. REALLY good basses.

Correct. See my post above. Essentially, Mike's main stage basses have been the following:

1980 Dan Armstrong plexi
1981(?)-1984/5 Rickenbacker
1984/5-1986/7 Guild Pilot
1987/9-1992 Black Precision
1995- Blonde Precision

It's my understanding that Bertis Downs and Bill Berry are also owners . . . and both considered to be "members" of the band even if they're not on stage.

Depends on what type of "ownership" you refer to, I guess. I'm not to familiar with the relationship between R.E.M./Athens LLC and their publishing companies, or whether Bertis actually holds a part of R.E.M./Athens LLC. But, all songs written by Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe (ie. everything before 1997) were published by Night Garden Music wheras everything written by Buck/Mills/Stipe is published by Temporary Music. Ie. two separate publishing companies.

Bill Berry's "official" status since he left has always been that he is still a member, albeit "retired in 1997". Bertis and Jefferson were listed as semi-members (Berry, Buck, Mills, Stipe....and...Downs and Holt) until Jefferson left. Now Bertis is simply listed as "advisor".

Interesting bit to know. Thanks Mr Hall :D

As I don't know the actual specifics of the company, I wasn't sure if Bertis is an owner or some form of special employee.

If Bill's owner, I wonder what the arrangement is for the stuff they did post his retirement.
None of my business really, but I bet it would be an interesting read.

Just curiosity of someone who's studied law

Title and tracklisting of the new album being known now the wait begins until it's actually in my hand as CD. I'm trying to avoid reading speculations and/or spoilers online - those didn't really improve the enjoyment of the last two albums, you know!

You got the DVD, then, right?

I'm not a video type of guy, no patience in sitting down and watching - maybe one day I'll get it though

No, I was in a hotel room watching an Asheville, NC PBS station. :)
