I have a 4001 with RW's on it with a variable cap control that I rigged up and can stand there with my amp and dial in or out the amount of cap I want in the circuit and the basic charactor of the bass doesn't change, it just becomes much more present.

Kenny, the '72 LH I just put back on the road has the new harness in it you sent me from RIC sometime back...I never put the additional cap in and it screams. Really happy with it this way...very 'Squire-y'.

Of course, I could just leave this one the way it is and get a 4003 down the road...

+1
That's the way to do it, leave it the way it is and get a 4003 as an alternate tone.

Kenny,I guess the question is how does it sound to you ?If you find its not full enough, bypass the cap.

Exactly. And seeing as how I don't own a bass amp, I won't really know until I go to someone's house and plug into their SVT.

Now alls you need is a 4005 lightshow to go with your guitar. And of course an svt.

It will sound good capped in an SVT but will sound even better uncapped. That bass looks like it's going to sound good. Sometimes when you uncap a 4001 you need to lower the bridge pickup a little to balance it if you do decide to bypass it. That's what I do I just soldier one strand of lamp card to both ends on the cap, it's reversable that way and takes about ten minutes, you can even rig up a temporary switch to see which way you like it better. When I use to play capped 4001's through SVT's I use to make up for the cap with the low mids boosted and they sounded good, but it was a PIA in different rooms.

Madam Wong passed away (we played her club with the Motels way back when). This popped up when I googled her name.

Well, Kenny, I'm 80 miles away, but you're quite welcome to swing on down and fire up my SVT this weekend.

2014 UPDATE
I took Kevin up on his offer, and wound up playing bass in his band (The Shambles) for many years, using the exact SVT rig he described here (a vintage one through a 4x8" [!] cab)!
He in turn loaned me his custom Hamer 12-string bass when I was working in Las Vegas, until PW built my 2030/12.
And the 4001 BG? I realized the fingerboard had previously separated from the neck, and someone unsuccessfully tried to glue it back, but the separation opened back up, and then the glue re-dried, so in a nutshell there's no way I could have made it work without removing and reattaching the whole fingerboard.
So I returned it within 30 days to the Brea GC.
And THAT, my friends, is how you revive a dead thread on a specialty music forum.

I think we've had this lesson before a few times.
