I already did some fixing...all of the pickguard screws were replaced with these big ugly hardware store things, and the neck was a little bowed. One trip to the parts box, and some shots of Deoxit, and the MojoGlo is screamin'.
The wiring wasn't monkeyed with at all, down to the .0047 cap. Jury is still out on removing it - normally I would, but I want to mess with some ROS bimaping stuff first.

I personally don’t get this removing the cap thing. I have 4 x 4001’s all with caps. I usually, except for one of them, turn the neck volume down a touch and a tad off the tone of the bridge PU. This gives me a very punchy, penetrating sound when used with the band; on its own I guess one might say it was subjectively a touch thin.
When the basses are recorded the producer can get any sound from a Mark King type of bright slap to the deepest, darkest subterranean bass one could imagine. I just recorded 3 numbers with my 78 Burg and the final sound ranges across the board.
I’m just about to sell my Fender J and Musicman because I can get all the sounds and expressions I need from my 4001’s (with the cap).
Just my 2 pence worth……..
