yeah i was looking at the78 burgandy 4001 on that site. But i dont know. I like that one and this one http://www.gbase.com/Stores/Gear/GearDetails.aspx?Item=838614
I believe that one is actually some what close to me. So i could go check it out in person. Hopefuly bring my bass teacher cause he knows 10 billion times more then I do. Plus he always wanted a blue one. So if i dont like it and he does i can always sell it to him.

Hey, maybe this is common knowledge, but do all 4001s basses have set necks? I thought all 4001's were neck throughs.

On the subject of Yes, I saw them twice, once on the Topographic Oceans tour, and then on the Relayer tour. Those were the days!

I really like the look of that Azureglo 4001. I'm still more of a mapleglo person myself.

4001s basses were, I believe, actually just 4000 basses with a neck pickup routed in. Since the 4000 basses were set neck, so were the 4001s basses.

See that? You learn something new everyday! I had forgotten that the 4000's were set neck as well. I've only actually seen one 4000 person, and that was like 30 years ago! I think it was Azureglo.

Mine actually has a small dimple next to the neck pocket, where I imagine drilling would have begun for the neck pup, which was finished over as if it were almost a 4001s. I've often wondered if the neck joint would stand the routing for another pup, but was always afraid to try. It's too nice as is to modify, though.

I just looked in at the site mentioned at the beginning, & that 1971 Tele bass looks like the one I used to own, only with slightly more fingerboard wear. Imagine a refin going for $1750!
I paid $550 for mine which was refined to a matte natural. It looked good that way, but I could never get enough definition from it, so I traded.
I'm just not much of a Fender fan, I guess.

Actually, not all 4000's are set-neck. They started the set-necks around '72 or so. A 60's 4000 is neck through.

set neck = glued in place, yes?

Set neck=long routed pocket in body where neck block is glued. Gibson frequently uses the same procedure I believe. It sounds differently than a through neck (one piece), or a bolt on.

Very hard to say "All Ricks Are"...anything. There is always one or 2 oddities out there...All 4001 / 4003 deluxe models are neck-thru. 4080, set neck with bolt on. 4000's? Well, a **** shoot. Even 4003s's can be set neck, right?
