I guess there is some technique involved...I ended up getting an A-B switch and switched it off when I had to get "in range".

Ted Nugent has played Gibson Byrdland hollowbodies for over 30 years and he seems to be able to get a good sound out of them without the uncontrollable feedback. The Byrdland is an even larger guitar than a 381, and Nugent's guitars appear to be 100% stock (with the exception of the pickup selector switch knob) so getting that 381 to perform at high volumes shouldn't be a problem.
Also, if another forum member is bidding on that guitar, I will politely back off. I don't want to ruin someone else's chance at getting that guitar if they were after it first.

I agree, if whoever gets the 381 is satisfied with the way it sounds with the Gibson pickups, I would leave it alone. I would guess that it would take a lot of work to reverse the mods that were necessary to install the larger Gibson humbuckers. I would say that if you are looking for a bone stock original, that it would be wise to pass on this one.

Does this guitar, or do the 381s as a rule have a center seam like mid-to-late 1960s 325s, 330s and 360s?

This guy's kind of a loose cannon...He's a pawn shop in Las Vegas, buys stock through eBay, but has not sold anything using this name, though he might have another name for selling. Or maybe he just turns it in his store. Or maybe he's laundering...
He buys vintage stuff, pays top dollar ($2500 for a Fender Starcaster? $90.00 for a Tele pickup selector switch?).
