No matter where you go - there you are.
68 Is a transitional year. Three different pickups can appear that year. Some, like the one for sale on eBay, the early type with the thin black plastic top that has the edge raised appear on a very few early 68s. Most others are like the ones in your pictures are greenish with a thicker top. Those can come with the older larger surround or the smaller rectangular surround. Still I have seen very late 68’s with non-horseshoes.
If I had a '68 4001 with a dead treble pickup, I'd spend $700 to make it perfect again. Simple as that.
