Well, from what I heard is that the phone company said they would get on it within 24 hours. So it is not up to us. It all depends on the phone company.

Oh and I am at the factory. I shall get up and smack Kenny right...... now.
No, I don't play the sax.

Thanks for keeping Kenny in line Richard.

I guess the phone company has a new slogan: "Reach out and unplug someone".

Sound almost like what happens at my office. Me - "What happened to the SQL server?!?!" Network guy - "I was walking behind the rack and kicked the plug out."

Doh.

Yikes, they're STILL down (Friday, 9:30am, Eastern time zone).

Contingency planning ... data replication ... hot off-sites ... ring a bell with anyone ... ?

Call before you dig!
It's a bit of a pain, but a company has to ask themselves how important is it to have a guaranteed web presence 24/7. I have a feeling that as far as RIC is concerned, it wouldn't be worth the expense.

I'm sure you're right Steve, especially since all they sell on the site are parts and accessories.

But still, there's the embarrassment factor. And it wouldn't take very much to have a site like their's replicated somewhere. Or just have a page saying "Sorry, but we're down right now." That kinda thing.

First of all, this whole problem exists outside of our building (where our web server is), so displaying a "sorry we're down" message might be a little tough. If we could display a message like that, our whole site would be up. It's a little difficult to display ANYTHING when a line going to your router is cut off 300 feet outside your building.

The long term contingency plan for our web server internet access going down would be to move it over to our secondary access provider. However, with DNS taking up to 72 hours to propagate, we want to be sure that we're not going to be up again within the 12 hours our provider said they'd need to figure out what happened.

Having gone through this experience, I will probably see about setting up a secondary web server that runs on our other provider, which would allow a smoother transition from primary to backup and vice versa, but realistically speaking, with a current instrument backorder of up to 2 years, I don't think we're going to fall off the map if our site is down for a day or two.
