Yes, the photos show the bass after a pile of clear coats have been applied. At that stage, the finisher is concerned with building depth. Afterward (maybe even tonight?) Paul W. will sand, clean, sand, then apply a couple more clear coats, then sand, clean, sand, and then buff. Trust me, it will be as smooth as glass when finished.
The photos show it a bit darker and redder than it will be. Black Cherry is a good description, although in person it will be more towards a brown violet. Kinda hard to describe, so you'll all have to come to the 75th event to see it in person.
