My preference is for the molded case as it will take the travel better since it isn't as fragile.
And yes, they do reek from the adhesive.And it doesn't go away very quickly;my 2006 4003FG still stinks.

I just ordered a Silver vintage case from Mike at The Rickenbacker Page awaiting its' arrival. What a great guy to talk to.
Very personable and leaves you feeling like..Hey, when I need something Rickenbacker again I'm going give him a call.
At least you can still get them.
