favorite rick case

Post by jwinstonp »

I no longer have a rick. I am looking for a new one. The one thing I disliked about the rick I owned was the case. I am not a fan of the black molded case. It seems to fall apart a bit and I just didn't dig the vibe. The vintage silver cases look sweet. I always wondered why they are not the rickenbacker case for all the guitars. I hope when I find a rick that I can get a vintage case. Silver cases are sweet.

the 3 modern style black Ric cases I have owned recently seem like they are made of graham crackers. utterly terrible construction. i'll take the older tolex/pleather/vinyl covered ones any day.

I agree that the tolex case is the best but it would bring up the price of the guitar probably at least another $100. But for me I would pay the extra. They are hard to come by and I've seen them new for $295.
They are the case to have.

All three of my electric Rics came with the vintage silver tolex case as the standard cases are unavailable for lefty Rics.

IMHO, I prefer the look of the silver vintage Tolex® case. However, the black molded case seems to offer a snugger fit and more protection. But watch out for those three clasps on the molded version. They sit like jaws waiting to take a bite out of your Ric if you are not careful. Of course, most if not all of us are careful when removing or returning our Rics to their cases. Just the same though, I lean mine upright for easier access. Vertical (or diagonal) is better for me than horizontal. Just my dos centavos" worth. Best regards....Goofyfoot.
Play on, pick often, jam with any Rickenbacker, and prosper.

I have one of the Silver "Vintage" cases for my 360-12, seems like the dealer (back in 2003) only charged me a $20-30 upcharge for it. My previous RIC, a 620-12JG came with a molded case (the badge said Rickenbacker, but the hasps said SKB) and the lower bout of the guitar sat about 3/8" from the metal valence. No matter how careful I tried to be, I still scuffed the Jetglo a couple of times on that. Plus the accessory compartment is bigger, and has a cover on the silver case. I don't know how either case would do in an impact, or crush test, but I'll take the silver case any day

You can get a new vintage case from any Rick dealer for around $249. When buying new you can't get any credit for your SKB case if you want the vintage.

From what I understand Rick dealers used to allow you to upgrade for less but no more.

I totally agree with the setiment here. The vintage style cases seem to be much more substantial than the standard cases, not to mention the fact that they just look cooler. This seems to be the case with most guitars though and not just Rics. I'd take a Fender vintage style case any day over a modern molded plastic. There's something inherently classy and professional (and cool) to show up with a tolex-covered, leatherette end-capped case for your instrument.

I only use the SKB cases for shipping;they're lighter and the form fit makes for less worrisome packing.
Other than that, the G&G silver cases are way cooler and sturdier.

I have owned Rics with the standard and the vintage cases, and I'll go for the vintage silver anyday. They have that awesome look, and it makes you feel like you're in the 60's.

What's this talk I hear about the standard cases having a horrible glue smell?
