The old Fender Jag thing. George B. and his Fender tech have been messing around, trying to set up one of his Strats so it has the option to sound like a Jag. One of the things they've done is put in 1M pots. It is darned close (the remaining and minor difference could be accounted for by pickup location and longer scale length.)

I'm putting together a 450S that I plan on using for surf. It was originally going to have Jag pickups hidden in toaster cases, but now it's going out with gennie old ('67) toasters, and 1M pots for both volume and tone.

Does anyone else reading this have an issue with the sound of a 12-string guitar with humbuckers?

Eye of the behoder, I guess. I think they are cool as heck, and the neck is nice and wide,

Except for the checked binding, that brings to mind the 360/12v64 WHT that sold a while back on eBay ... that was one bea-u-tiful guitar!

Does anyone else reading this have an issue with the sound of a 12-string guitar with humbuckers?

I found a lovely Jimmy Page style double-neck at a Garage Sale in Lawrence about eight years back for $350. It hadn't been taken care of really, several chips and dings, missing chunk of binding on the bottom edge of the 6-string neck, belt buckle rash so bad it looked like someone had worn a file on their buckle. There's also quite a few dings all over the body. It will NEVER be mistaken as a guitar that someone's really taken great care of. However, it plays like a dream. It has open/exposed looking zebra humbuckers on the 6-string neck with these funny pickup "covers" that have cutouts directly over the top of the pickups that protect them but also let you view the coils, and it gives them a slighty different sound than a standard open coil, but the 12-string has covered pickups. I don't play Zeppelin songs or even Zeppelin style, but I liked the versatility of the guitar when I found it, as I had been using a matching Aria 6 and 12-string 330 copies on stage, and this seemed like it would be fun and unique. However, the 12-string neck on the guitar has come to be one of my all time favorite 12-strings. It doesn't sound like you'd expect it to, it's smoother and not as thick as most humbucker sounds (although I wouldn't call them thin sounding) and has a quite single-coil feel with a nice bit of compression. It will NEVER been mistaken for a Rickenbacker when you hear it. But it doesn't sound bad at all, especially though the neck. I have played a couple of different 12-string/humbucker combos in the years since and haven't liked them at all, they just didn't feel right at all sound-wise. I guess what I'm saying is that most of them I have an issue with, but I take them on a case by case basis.

(I apologize if this doesn't make any sense, I have a kidney stone and they're treating it with Percocet. Which is making me feel very odd and not okay. I know I've been rambling in person in my speaking, so I hope that it doesn't come across that way right now.)

Is there an official word yet on a 2009 COY or other items?

If you really want an imitation Ric 12, there is a more attractive RIC-licensed option:
The Chandler 555.

Those 355s are not 12's. The slotted headstock was designed after a classical guitar to pull more tension over the nut but they are still 6 strings. They do not make that style headstock anymore... Still 3 x 3 design. Also, no longer set neck. Bolt neck. Still great guitar and it rocks. I've got one made in 2005 or so. Their sound is very unique but useable. If that makes sense.
