Sir please step away from the Ci with that drill..... you know they don't make those anymore! At least they still make Cii's so no harm there.......

Brian, I like not modding the Ci for the same reasons as Mark just stated. Yeah, keep us posted as this progresses. Interesting. Hmmm, a Cii 8 string! I saw Todd's MG Laredo at MARF and had ideas of an 8 string. That bass sounded HUGE through the EBS combo Chris played it through.

Brian, which ever way you go (i or ii) 4004 8's are great!

I'm looking forward to the project......as much for the project itself as the finished product. Three p/u's (LK configuration), traditional s8 style headstock and new body/headstock facings. Basically, "minor" modifications.

....Mark happens to have a vested interest in me using the Cii over the Ci.......the Cii I bought is his!
I'm already plotting out the jig I need for knocking down the body surface. It should be fun and I'll be sure to run a thread as it progresses. Now all I have to do is sell the Ci that I haven't even received yet.

When Brian gets the Ci I will check it out and if I pass, then Joey can come get it!

Got to get him to Cleveland so how!

While thinking through my project at a moonlighting job last night I may have come to a simpler solution to reaching my goals. I am set on it being an 8 string and I already know how I'll be doing the headstock so that isn't an issue. Adding a new body facing was primarily on my list to cover the truss rod access routes done by Ric (a repair done on this bass not shown on the attached pic), secondly to allow for repositioning the p/u's and adding a 3rd and lastly just for project fun and to get a more original/custom look. The grain and flame on this Cii is not crazy but is certainly nice so another solution struck me.....
.....DARKSTARS!
With careful positioning and minimal routing they would probably just about completely hide the Ric routes plus they should scream on an 8 string. Bonus. Nothing on this project is set except for the donor bass and that it will be an 8-er. I still have plenty of plotting ahead and I'm sure it will continue to evolve until I fire up the router, saw, sander, band-aids, etc.

I've had two basses that you've "checked out" and you bought neither so I'm not holding my breath.
Money talks sister!
(I guess it would help if I actually had the bass in my possession)

Cool idea, Brian!
I know Tim Sarter used to have the 4004 Darkstar and loved it, but I wonder how well those Darkstar poles line up with the 4004 string spacing?

I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the grain and flame on this Cii, there is a lot of depth to the finish that can't be captured with a photograph. It's a very nice example of a mapleglo Cii and I'm sure Mr. Scott can attest to that.
