Crashing Waves was recorded at Route 44 Studio in Sebastopol CA. with Harry Gale at the helm
Crashing Waves is the name of a Kenpo Karate technique, but fits the surf music vibe.
The song is in the key of Bm as Joseph complained that most all our stuff is in Em or Am so wrote this one. It is much more chord driven than the surf style would denote. Paul on a Rick 660/12 and I'm on a 330/6. We did two takes and added some compression to bring out the chime. Also some "coastal flavor" was added fore and aft. The song is quite different from most of our stuff and gave the guys fits with some odd chord changes...

AAAAAHHH!!!! You guys are KILLIN' me! I didn't know that Paul Wilczinski was in North Of Malibu! On the CD you sent, it just says "Paul - guitars." I listed all the RRF members on the inner-fold liner notes to accompany the song titles, but unfortunately Paul is not listed because I didn't know it was "our" Paul! Forgiveness please for my part in this glaring omission!

At least that proves you were impartial in your selection

Paul howls like no other..at least so I've been told ...he's on lead on Moon Dawg as well...

"Waiting Here"

First, the drums were recorded on an old Yamaha MT120 4 track cassette (snare/hi hat, kick, mounted tom, floor tom) because I like the sound of drums "captured" to tape versus digital. These tracks were then dubbed over to an old Roland VS-840EX - you know, the little one that uses Zip disks? Though its called an 8 track, its basically a 4 track with two stereo tracks . The tracks were tweeked with EQ/Reverb, panned, and mixed to a stereo track. Next, guitars and bass tracks were recorded to the Roland, tweeked and panned, and mixed to the second stereo track. Vocals were last to be recorded. The song was then mixed down to a wav file on a PC and burned. It was never professionally master but a friend added a smidge of overall stereo EQ and reverb, and maybe a little compression (can't quite remember) for the final version. And thats it.

about Brainfood
Brainfood was a "studio band" that began in the early 80's as a songwriting project. Peter, Mark and I would get together for an entire weekend every so often and knock out 2-3 finished tracks each time. Our first album, called "Great Society" was completed in 1985 and released locally with some critical success. This song was on BrainFood’s “Seven Oceans” CD, which was released locally in 1992. The actual recording of the song was done in 1989. Sadly, my partner, the lead vocalist and primary composer, Peter Lovi was killed in a plane crash in December 1989, ending the band. Completing the bum-out, Mark Dauberman died in 1994 at age 34, leaving me as the only living member of this band.

Inspiration for the Song
Peter was a very heavy coffee drinker and the inspiration for the song came from me insulting the "Monkey on his Back" that made him get up early and go out to find coffee. Peter lived in upstate N.Y. and would stay at my house during recording sessions - we don't drink coffee so he had to go out first thing every morning to get his Java.

This song was recorded with my 1974 Black 4001 bass, direct into the console. The guitar was a heavily modified strat copy through several stompboxes. The drums were Yamaha Recording Series, with 4 toms. We recorded it at my studio in the summer 1989. The studio at that time featured a Tangent 3216 console and a Fostex B-16 half inch analog 16 track recorder. The song was mixed to Technics RS-1500 two track deck, and the entire album was mastered by Glenn Meadows at Masterfonix in Nashville, TN.

Here's a shot of us recording percussion in the studio taken around the late 80's. Peter is on the left, Mark on the right. If you look closely, you can see Peter playing a group of Pepsi glasses with different amounts of water in them to tune them to a particular melody we were augmenting. We did a lot of that type of crazy stuff.

At the ripe old age of 50, Roy has been a professional musician since the age of 14, and is self taught on keyboards, guitar, and bass. After cofounding and recording with several innovative original-only progressive rock and fusion jazz bands in his 20’s, Roy returned to his home town of York, PA to start a business. During the ‘80s he began to work in Philadelphia studios as a session musician on hit albums from top soul artists like Teddy Pendergrass, Patti Labelle, The O’Jays, Lou Rawls, and Grover Washington, Jr. He is fluent in many musical styles, including rock, country and jazz.

He is also an accomplished recording engineer and producer. He has owned and operated a successful recording studio for over 20 years. He has produced literally hundreds of projects, ranging from demos to multi-disc albums, including a top ten charting song he co-wrote with Dexter Wansel and Cynthia Biggs.

Roy co-founded, built, and ultimately sold Turtle Beach Systems, a leading developer of digital recording hardware and software. Turtle Beach was among the first to bring CD-quality digital recording to the IBM PC, helping make possible the digital audio world as we know it today. After leaving Turtle Beach in 1995, Roy focused on venture capital investments into emerging growth companies through his partnership, Wellspring FV. His most recent venture is “FlyCast”, a mobile broadcasting company that brings thousands of channels of entertainment to smartphones such as the Apple iPhone and BlackBerry. In November 2008, Apple Computer announced that FlyCast was among the top ten free musical applications on the iPhone App Store.

I found it ironic that 'Java Monkey' was such a satirical, light-hearted song in juxtaposition to the band's tragic history.

Finally getting around to posting my info....

My song You Alone was played on my Ric 615 and 4001V63 bass, and recorded on my Korg D-1200 unit..... Unfortunately I had to rely on my unit's canned drum tracks, since I'm not a drummer, LOL!
